replace engine or mower?

I have a John Deere LA 115 consumer grade riding mower that is in really good shape, but the engine blew up today. (the oil level was good)
Do I replace the motor with a brand new one for about $600, or spend $1500 or $1600 to buy a new mower? Or buy a totally different brand altogether?

Troll the inter webs till you find a used one and change the oil and tune it up and drive it for about $250.

You can more than likely find a replacement engine from someone on CL or other sites...

Used engine or predator harbor freight mother and run it

$600 isn't bad for a brand new engine. Harbor Freight sells their 22HP vertical shaft Predator for $700. There might be a coupon floating around out there so you could save a few bucks on it if you decide to go that route.

I found some new ones in Oxford for $450 for exact replacement.

I found a older craftsman with the twin cylinder Kohler and converted mine over. It was a very easy swap.

I found a low hours tractor to swap the engine out of. If anyone wants the leftover tractor for a LS swap lets talk.
