recommend a starter gun

Like others said I would go with a 9mm for your first. It is a good caliber because it is cheaper and you want to shoot often when first handling a hand gun. After you become comfortable I would step up to the bigger rounds. I have a XDm 3.8 9mm and love it. I am now eying the XDs

Yup about $3-4K for a clone SP89 about $5-7K for a real SP89 and about $25K for an MP5K that's transferable (typically an SP89 with a transferable pack).
 
I shot 9mm/.45 glock and XD and noticed some things i liked about each. The thing you have to remember imho is that the smaller it is the harder it may be to shoot accuratly. The size difference between compact/sub compact to me is pretty minimal. I also had to price out 30rd mags before chosing :)
 
My first was my Sig P226 in 9mm. For an amature, it makes me look pretty good...just ask Al. :lol:

As mentioned, go with what feels comfortable. I was a big fan of Glock until I shot one. Glad I didn't just jump into one. Another one that worked well for me was the Beretta 90-two in 9mm (or as I call it, the Bruce Willis gun). Felt great to shoot, simple to operate... Just couldn't pass up the reputation of the 226.

Mine was a SIG 225.

Go try a variety and see which is most comfortable for you.

Ive had my CPL for a while now and havent bought a gun yet. I went last week and tried out a few guns and decided on a 9mm Springfield sub compact. I think it will be a good gun to carry, and ammo is reasonable

Any of these three. Don't let any mall ninja tell you one is better than the other. The one that fits your hand best, you shoot the best, and feel the most comfortable with is the best gun for you.

Also, 9mm is a great caliber. Start there. Cheaper ammo, so practice a lot.
