Ratchet shifter

Would there be a purpose to installing a ratchet style shifter like the b&m hammer on an AOD trans? Wouldn't you still have to shift 1-D-1-D? I've got an Art Carr AOD with a stall around 2200-2400.

The 1-D-1 shuffle doesnt have anything to do with the shifter you have installed. You would need a new/modified valve body in the trans to take care of that issue. If you do not plan on upgrading that then IMO it would be pointless to install a ratchet type shifter. It would be harder for you to shift it back into 1 after the 2 shift. The B&M hammer is a decent shifter and the lockouts are nice all you have to do is slam it forward to get into the next gear and dont have to worry about going to far when racing. I have one installed in my foxbody Mustang and like it for the most part. If I were to do it over again I would probably choose a quarter stick. I'm not sure how fitment is on a car that already has an AOD installed from the factory, but my car was originally a 5 spd and the modifications that were needed to make the console fit properly was a NIGHTMARE. I probably have 10+ hours into putting that SOB in.

Also, if you are looking to get rid of the AOD shuffle shift I would look into Silver fox trans. He builds valvebodies for AOD and hsd a pretty good reputation. http://www.silverfoxtrans.com/silverfoxtrans.com/VB_AOD.html

Good luck!

That's what I figured. I'd probably have a lot of fabrication into it too because its a mustang tranny going into an 84 crown Vic. I just don't really want to change the linkage on the trans to make it would with a column shifter. I thought it'd be easier to just cut a hole. I'd really like the performance look of the hammer or a hurst like the quarter stick. I think it'd be more nostalgic or period correct. Thanks for the handy advice!
