Rammstein sued over 'Mein Teil' Cannibal song

Old news but I found it interesting. I knew the song was about cannibalism but I didn't know it was based on a true story. Apparently Manson named an album "Eat Me,Drink Me" after the incident and there's several other movies and songs about the guy as well. Creepy.

Rammstein Story:

United Press International is reporting that a convicted German
cannibal has filed suit against industrial metallers RAMMSTEIN,
claiming their song "Mein Teil" (My Piece) is based on his crimes.

Armin Meiwes was sentenced to 8 1/2 years in prison for eating a man
(Bernd Juergen Brandes) he met on the Internet. He filmed the entire
incident and confessed as well, but said it was not murder since his
victim wanted to be eaten.

Speaking to MTV.com in December 2004 about the inspiration for the
track, RAMMSTEIN guitarist Richard Kruspe said, "I was really
interested to find out about why he would want to kill a man and eat
[him]. What I figured out from some research was that Meiwes' mother
totally destroyed all kinds of relationships he had in his childhood.
So, he felt that if he did this, his victim would stay with him
forever. It was just a really interesting story, so we decided to make
a song about it."

Since Meiwes videotaped his entire grisly encounter with Brandes,
RAMMSTEIN initially wanted to use some of the footage for the song's
video. But the tape was in police custody. So instead, the band and
director Zoran Bihac shot a stark, contrast-y clip in Berlin that had
nothing to do with cannibalism.

"The director had everyone in the band come into the room for two hours
and do anything he wanted," Kruspe told MTV.com. "And nobody knew what
the other guys were doing. It came out even darker than I thought it
would. But I'd still like to see the police video."

Meiwes is also suing to stop the release of the horror film "Butterfly:
A Grimm Love Story", calling it a "slavish re-enactment" of his story,
The Hollywood Reporter said. "I feel used," the killer added.

Attorney Harald Ermel said his client did not give permission for his
story to be fictionalized in the film starring Keri Russell. He has
already given rights to document his case to a Hamburg company,
Stampfwerk.

Meiwes returns to court in Cologne, Germany Thursday (Jan. 12) where
prosecutors are expected to push for an extended prison sentence.

Yeah, I definitely want to see them in concert. Maybe I can watch them the next time I'm in Germany if they don't come here. I believe they have a new cd in the works. Another german rock band I really like is Boehse Onkelz (bad uncles) They had a not so pleasant past history but once they turned around their music it was awesome.

No, it was named after Alice in Wonderland. It was a concept album based on that.

We'll call it a tie. :)

1:57 he talks about Alice, but says it's too simple of an explanation
2:30 he mentions the story of the guy above

MTV:
"The album title can be interpreted to hold several meanings, not the least of which are the obvious references to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" — he's been fascinated with the book and its author, Lewis Carroll, for years — vampires and the Catholic Eucharist. Manson also said the title was partly inspired by German cannibal Armin Meiwes.

"Once you've been in a position where you don't want to live, and you find a reason to live, you're perfectly justified to decide how you would chose to die," Manson said. "And if I had a choice, being devoured and devouring the person you're obsessed with is the most romantic idea possible. The only complication is the practicality of it, that one person just gets full and the other person's dead. I mean it in a literal sense and a metaphorical sense, but I think that I don't plan on being eaten anytime soon. I clearly want people to consume me with this record. I am offering myself as a sacrifice, and letting people see what's inside of you is really the same thing to me."

Rock artist Marilyn Manson has identified Meiwes as inspirational in the titling of his album, Eat Me, Drink Me. Manson explained in an article what this story meant to him: "Although I can't relate to the relationship those two had, I found the story very compelling in a romantic way. I think a lot of people wouldn’t look at it as romantic, but it was to them in some sick way, and it is to me in some sick way, too."

I wouldn't necessarily say he mentioned that story in the video, it seemed to me like it was more about Christ offering himself. And there's no reference on the website you quoted to say where they got that quote of Marilyn Manson. We can call it a tie, it probably is both. Plus it's all the same concept anyways. Good finds.
