Racer in 24 hours of lemons dies!

Sad indeed. A friend just asked me yesterday if I wanted to participate in one of these events as a driver.

I read about this on a Volvo site as well.

Lemons or Le Mans???

Its horrible and sad, but is it really a surprise? I thought it was only a matter of time until something like that happened. Wheel to wheel competition on real tracks with beater cars, some with home built cages and other low budget equipment, and drivers that might or might not have a racing license. When lemons rules were posted last time I was shocked to see that if you didn't have a racing license you could just buy one for $50. Buy one???

You don't have to have a racing license to do an open track day @ any road course, or at the drag strip, or auto cross... Whats the difference?? And you DON'T have to have a cage (in most situations) -- OR a harness... OR a helmet (depending on track/rules)...

Open track days are not wheel to wheel competition. You are not even allowed to be timed. It takes some time just to get licensed for time trialing competition let alone full blown W2W.

You're saying passing does not occur at open track events?? :jagoff:

And that drivers are not going at high speeds?? :jagoff:

You can wreck a car in a race by yourself, you don't need another driver to fuck up or have the car itself fail mechanically.

Notice, they are explicit in their rules stating safety equipment is NOT budgeted! And that SFI rated safety equipment is required!!

I'm thinking that soon the details will come out, and they may find that this guy died of a heart attack or something like that. According to police, he was only going 50-60mph, and according to witnesses, there were no brake lights. Also, the pics they show don't show a whole lot, but it still doesn't look like a ton of damage to the car.

Properly organized open track events have restricted passing rules. Usually only on the straightaway(s), and ONLY with a point by. Open track days with passing restrictions and car spacing are not in the same league as full blown racing.

I totally agree. It could have been just that, or a medical condition. I know that the lemons safety equip is not budgeted but how many people are going to spend a ton of money on a beater thats going to get junked after. I thought it also said that they are allowed to buy your car from you for $500?

Either way its horrible. After seeing a guy wreck and die in front of me last year at MO I look at things differently now.
