R/C car people, question(s)

I was going thru some crap in my house the other day and got to thinking that I want to pull out my R/C stuff and get them up and running again. I have a Team Associated RC10T3 (electric Baja truck) that is in need of some upgrades. It was built with descent parts in the 2001 time frame.

Any advice on inexpensive upgrades as far as battery/motor combo?

I also have an RC10GT (.15 nitro) that needs some love but is all there.

Lastly, a like-new HPI Nitro RS4-3 that I cant really use due to crappy streets and a low chassis. I was toying around with getting some knobby tires and setting the suspension to the highest setting and going with a Rally style setup (or being forced to find a pristine parking lot)

I haven't been in the R/C game for at least 10 years so I need to relearn what brand(s) is good and what components to go with.

Brushless motor and Lipo batteries. Castle makes great stuff but it's expensive. I run Tacon motors and Hobby wing ESC's. Smc or spc lipos are reasonable. I sold all my nitro stuff once I went brushless.

Yea, nitro used to be all the rage and now all of the new stuff seems to be electric.

What about chargers for the lipos?

Also, I need some rechargeable AA batteries for the transmitter/receiver, any suggestions?

My sons and I have 20 of them at last count. Nitro and electric. Boats and cars.

For kids you can't go wrong with Traxxas. Very durable and quick out of the box. For racing, associated or losi would be my go to. Smoother operation, fast and well balanced, but not as tough for bashing. Buy off CL and let someone else take the price hit. All of the above brands are well supported with service parts and aftermarket hop up parts. Here are some of ours. Six are missing from this pic.

I did this last year, but I used to have a ton of stuff about 25 years ago. Went to the local hobby shops and looked around, asking the workers about what I used to have. They looked at me like a deer in headlights, no idea what I was talking about. I still want something, but I have real cars now that I don't have time to work on, so I passed...I still want to stop in to check them out though.
Used to race on road cars, buggies, stadium trucks, all sorts of crap, all the good stuff is gone now it seems...

Good stuff is gone? Have you watched youtube by chance? That trick crap from the 90's is a doorstop compared to most of what can be had out of the box now. Power, speed, durability, size, run time... INSANE in comparison. You can get 1/64th or 1/4 scale. I've watched your run of the mill Lipo Slash get BEAT TO HELL, race after race and suffer no breakage.

I've yet to buy anything modern myself but 6+ people in my family have Lipo brushless Slash trucks. My oldschool Losi LX-T still runs quick with a 12 turn mod and 1500mah Ni-cad but it is dead in 3 minutes and breaks when ALL the time.

I updated all my old tamiya stuff with traxxas VXL brushless stuff. It's usually really cheap on forums or eBay and some solid shit.

Yup. I had an LX-T with all kinds of mods, ran great but every time I'd go to race it something would break. I just donated all my stuff to good will a couple years ago. I realized I'm never going to use it. I still want an old school clodbuster tho. I had a Tamiya Super Blackfoot that I beat the shit out of mercilessly and it took it like a champ.

Actually I have old stuff as well, but will tell you without a doubt, the new stuff is far superior to the old stuff in every way.

where did you race and when? I raced in the early-mid 90's. Also race 3 nights a week in 3 states around virginia

I run a hitec charger, it's basically 4 chargers in one. So I can charge all 4 of the same type of pack or different Types and sizes. My boys have traxxas stampedes that run 3s lipo, those will wheelie at any speed. We have a traxxas X-Maxx that's a big ass 4x4 they run on 2 3s packs for 6s. My personal rig is a Losi 5th scale that has a 32 cc 2 stroke engine in it.
