Quick tech help needed

Over the last few months I've spent some free time helping a buddy tear the 5.0 out of his fox, drop it off at the machine shop, rebuild it, and install it. All seemed to go together pretty smooth but now it won't start. It keeps popping and seems like its fighting itself to start up. I have power at the box and according to the spark tester I'm getting spark at all 8 cylinders, the coil, and at the distributor. Timing isn't off. I checked, double checked, and triple checked the marks on the timing gears before putting the cover on. I've tried spinning the distributor to adjust timing and even taken it out and spun it 180 degrees. Any ideas? I know this is tech help in the pub but I won't be able to get back to his house for a few weeks and I know this section gets some major traffic.

Thanks!
Mike

Are you sure the timing is correct ? Does it have a factory balancer? Those things have been known to spin on the dried out rubber.

We (mostly me) are morons. I didn't realize one bank was 1/2/3/4 and the other was 5/6/7/8. I thought it was 1/3/5/7 and 2/4/6/8 like a SBC. I swapped the wires and it was 10x better but wouldnt' start. Pulled the plugs, cranked it over, put in new plugs, and it cranked over about 1/2 a turn and fired!. I had the firing order right the whole time on the distributor because its marked on the cap. I feel like an idiot but I guess you learn something new each day.
