ugh, this this turning out to be more of a pain in the ass then i had imagined.... picked up some peeling chrome cobra r's a week of so ago and have been looking into getting them blasted and simply painting or having them powder coated. well just about every shop i talk to now says i need them de-chromed, as in chemically :(

anyone have any info on this? or even some input? i wanted to have em on the car for this weekend since i'm taking the car on a small road trip but it's not looking like it's going to happen... any and ALL help in this is very much appreciated

Any place who does sand/media blasting can do it. I had some 17X8 Tri-bar wheels dechromed at Masonic and Utica. I think it was called Pollec (sp) Sand blasting....BUT there are sponsors on this site who do powdercoat, so I assume they do media/sand blasting too.

C & S powder coating

There is DIY but dechrome requires reversing electrical current to the wheel and some Chemical reaction.. I dont understand it totally. saw pictures of it and It is messy. better off to let a shop do it

shops are saying they cant be blasted because they are alum rims. and i have been in contact with kyle from c&s but he cant have em looked at until monday.

just was wondering if anyone knew where i could have acid dipped?

It's not acid dipping. A chrome shop can do this for you for roughly half the cost of plating. When bumpers are rechromed, the old chrome has to come of and the same is true with wheels. Take them to a chrome shop and tell them to just strip them.

problem with this is the fact that all the shops i have talked to tell me they cant be sandblasted because they are alum rims. i guess it will tear the actual rim up? i'm starting to wonder if i can just have them glass beaded or something to scuff up the finish so the paint will at least stick? i'm painting them black anyways and this is by no means a show car.... a nice car yes but no show car:lol:

X2. Did that to bumpers and then painted them. They stripped off the chrome to the bronze.

thats horseshit i sandblast aluminum intakes at school all the time i did a dart bbc one today and its all still their, looks damn good to

idk I cant see it messing up the aluminum, it is probably a BITCH to blast the chrome off but I dont think it's impossible. are you sure they are chrome and not just coated polished aluminum, is the chrome peeling or that clear coating. I just didnt know they actually had chrome one's.

Hmmm....that's weird. Mine turned out fine. The rim was pitted, but that was because the corrosion ate threw the chrome and started on the wheel. I mean these rims were baaaad.

Apples and oranges here! intakes do not support the weight of a vechicle or do they have to be blanced.

I had a set of gold GTA/GNX Wheels sandblasted so I could repaint them and they came out perfectly fine. 2 coats of paint and they balanced out dead nuts

The best and easiest way to do this is, throw the chrome wheels away, buy silver wheels and have them blasted and powder coated. Aluminum wheels can be blasted with no problem. You just cant use big steel shot. Call me if you would like and I can give you more info.

youre gonna spend more between what you paid for the wheels you got and stripping and repainting them than you would have by just buying a set of used silver ones

i blasted my aluminum wheels
