Question for my motown brothers

Ok For my Motown brothers tell me if I am reading too much into this. A guy in Arizona and I have been communicating for about the last two weeks about doing a trade for carburetors. He contacted me thru a add I have on racing junk. We go back and forth with e-mails with the details. So he e-mails last Thursday and says he wants to make the deal (I had already told him he had to ship me his first) and he had agreed to do that. So I give him my address, he called me Friday and left a voice mail (we had never previously talked to each other) Friday my Aunt passed so I did not call him back until Sunday and left a voice mail and also sent him a e-mail apologizing for not calling him sooner and explained the what happened. For those of you that don’t know I am black, and all of a sudden now that I left him a voice mail he has not responded at all. Used to always respond within 24 hours now its been almost 3 days. I feel like he was cool with everything until he found out I was black, am I reading too much into this?

I think so... when buying and selling I found that most people are flakey at best. He probably had an ad posted and found a buyer and instead of letting you know it was easier for him to ignore you.

How does a phone call / email let him know youre black (unless you actually told him for some reason )?

Maybe a similar situation happened to him (family member passing)...

Maybe he just realized he didn't want to ship his part first and called it off. Sold it locally, etc... people are flakes

In most cases you can tell just based on your voice. There is diffintely a difference in the voice of black and white people in most cases. Cant describe but having worked in customer serice and taken many calls in my past you can tell.

I saw your previous post...
My opinion is you are still better off.
I'm sure he figured out, when you saw the label shipped from Jamaica, that you would know it was a pile of crap, so he bailed.
Or as mentioned also, maybe his uncle died, or something similar.
Don't sweat it

I think it is possible, who knows. He might have called you and since you didnt call him back for a couple day, he might think you are a tire kicker too. I dont know what it is about people who want to buy things sometimes, they will commit thru everything then no-show the day of the sale (Im talking like 20 emails back and forth, mutiple attempts to meet etc) That could be the case, those couple days might have made him change his mind. Or maybe since you took a couple days, hes going to take a couple to get back. I wouldnt read too much into it

Probably. Sounds like you waited 3 days to get back with him after his email Thursday (waited until Sunday), so I wouldn't read too much into him waiting the same amount of time to get back to you. Life happens sometimes. Just email him back asking if he is still interested in doing the deal, because you have had interest more locally but didn't want to sell it from under him since he was working with you so long already. If he's serious, he'll sense some urgency there and get back with you. If he's not, then he won't.

It was just real weird he was contacting me constantly for 2 weeks then all of sudden nothing. Even if he changed his mind I would have thought he would have at least sent a e-mail saying he decided to go a different way.

You would think so, but a lot of people don't have the common courtesy to do so.

9 times out of 10 I have to send the sellers an email asking if they are still interested and about half of them will respond.

As others have said, give him a few days. Otherwise.....

It is almost impossible to say if this silence is due to him having
other things going on or because he found out you’re a black man –
unless he came right out & told you so.

I personally wouldn’t let this question disturb me. Error on the
more positive side, he is just a buyer who fails & not a racist.

In either event, you wouldn’t want to deal with him & he
probably did you a favor in the long run.

Well I feel your pain this has happened to me a few times. I have communicated with various car guys down through the years. I was chatting with a racer for weeks and set up a time to meet at Milan. I knew he had a Cobra Mustang and he knew I had a blue ls1 camaro. Day comes I show up and recognize his stang and I approach him say his screen name and I say mine Boduke his disposition changed towards me like we never chatted at all. I guess he didnt expect BODUKE to be a black man. Find another carb from someplace else.
