Propane for garage heat??

My garage is detached. Have a few winter projects to knock out. Was thinking about a propane furnace and an external type tank. House is to far away to run a natural gas line. Does anyone run this kind of setup? How big a furnace for a two car garage? how big a propane tank?

Thanks

Derek.-

Running a gas line is cheap, it sure would be a lot cheaper to run a line from your house than get into a propane setup with new tank etc.

How far exactly is the house from the detached??

You can get some idea in this pic - its a good 30 feet away - and the grade goes up. I would be concerned about enough volume getting to the garage.

The garage is not insulated - have been using a torpedo heater in the past. It crapped out last winter - and I am tired of the fumes.

You don't need a lot of volume of gas to run a furnace. The main into your house is only like 5-10psi anyway.

If I were you, I would grab a shovel and start digging for the new pipe.

First of all...insulate your garage. The first winter I had no insulation and both my stored cars had dead batteries in the spring. Last fall I insulated the garage and both of the same cars and same batteries in them were not dead. It was noticeably warmer in there as well.

Propane heat works good. My friend had a bachelor party in his new garage with no insulation. Girls got naked in there and put on a show so it was pretty damn warm.......seriously.

After the meter it is 2-3psi, fwiw.
