Project sLoW dOwN

98 Camaro

It makes me sad to do this project....but it necessary.

I've owned this car since 1998....its had every configuration...NOS, Blower and currently its Turbo + NOS.

The issue is I don't seem to use the car anymore....and it seems to be broke at least once during the summer season. I love the current combo....but it needs to be faster to compete in the Street Car Shootout scene.

Current setup:
418W
S484 Billet Turbo
E85
AOD-e Trans
ZEX Plate Kit - 150HP shot. (used for launch only)

Car has ran a best of 5.87@122.

Planned changes:

- Swap AOD-e to a T5 stick trans
- remove Turbo kit
- Long tubes with X-Pipe and Mufflers
- swap 160lb injectors to something smaller and switch from E85 to 93 OCT
- Swap turbo cam to NA cam
- Recover rear seat to matching Sparco material
- cut out roll bar
- New carpet
- HID foglights
- Fix paint on hood and paint engine compartment
- Install Sway bars
- radio/speaker upgrade
- Rear disc brake conversion
- replace the Weldon pump with a bosch quiet pump.

This is a tough decision. I know I will miss the power the current setup....but I drove it and from work and it took about 20 gallons of E85 (150 miles round trip) so it was roughly $40 to drive it for the day.....which is crap.

I will have a large list of parts for sale soon...so if anyone is looking for mustang turbo stuff....let me know.

That's a tough decision but I understand where you're at. Many times the "slower" cars are more fun day in and day out. It's a nice looking car and should be enjoyed.

I have a car similar to yours but on the old Vortech (not as much power). How durable has your AOD-E been at that power? Anything special done? I might be interested in some of your parts.

Hmmm, are you sure this is the best route? Would it be much simpler and maybe cheaper to sell this car and get another that is more of a driver? Not saying yours isn't the best way to meet your goal, just hoping you at least considered the other route.

I thought about that as well...but there is certainly sentimental value...plus it would be the perfect time to do the build. My boys are 7 and 5 and would enjoy tearing it apart.

Hey Dean,

The trans had no issues at the current power level. It lasted me 3 seasons the first time. I had it freshened up last spring and switched to a triple disc lock up converter.

T5 is the only way to go, or T56. :) Love an Oxford White GT....

Im kinda in the same boat, wouldnt mind selling mine for a more stockish GT or Cobra.
Good luck man.

cant say i blame you tim. once these cars gte to a certain point you either need to spend a lot of money to go a bit faster to stay with the fast cars or back it down and make it fun again. when i got rid of my camaro it was the same way. i chose to sell it and just take a step back for a bit. now i have a 03 cobra (im selling it currently) but it was way more fun to drive this summer than my camaro was. not having to worry about it breaking all the time was much easier too

I'm in the same boat so I understand! I haven't started my car in a year! Been considering a similar move for years.

I was at the track this weekend and I'm sold on the new coyote engines. One of those would be great in that car. If I ever make a change to mine, that's the direction I'll go in.

That's the goal....T56 is what I'm looking for, but will settle for a TKO600 or something like that

'I loved your car....and was sad to see you sell it.....but you are right on the money. I either step up, or step back. I had a race car before....and its a lot of money and time. With little kids now, I'm ready to change up the game a little.

thanks. i miss the shit out of it but do not regret selling it. i thought about parting it all out and just making something more cruiser-ish out of it but the whole set up was built for the car so it didnt make sense.

good luck with your transition. hopefully you enjoy the car more
