Potholes

Lived in Mn for 13 years. They have beautiful roads in comparison. No cement squares for streets, no salt (sand instead), etc. I just think they half-ass the roads 'round here. I watched some dudes re-do the main road I live on. They just ground the top couple inches of shit off, and slapped a thin layer of fresh stuff on top. I suspect it won't last for long….actually, I'd bet money.

I thought gas tax payed for road repairs I guess not in Michigan. Im sick of all the potholes go to flint and destroy your car just driving down the road

A contractor would never bid on a project.

Testing is done every step of the way during construction...........materials used, slump testing (concrete), density for HMA etc etc. If the construction meets spec the contractor is good to go.

I love it when people ask "what kind of guarantee to you give for Concrete".... With this Michigan weather, I guarantee that it will break!
We do give a 1 year warranty with our commercial work but when we do roads, we do it to the county or city specification
As stated above, if those specs don't pan out AFTER the cement is down, the concrete gets pulled back out, the concrete plant and my boss pays for it out of there pockets. So we make sure we follow the specs to a T.
The problem is not with truck weight or how thick the concrete is.... It's with those shitty specification that the city's been using for the past 60 years.
Gearing my self up for another great year of concrete work!

Some genius out there has to have came up with a material that won't freeze :dontknow: What about making the roads out of a composite rubber or something of the sort?

Hmmm.. that would make street racing interesting?

hell it would probably be cheaper to make heated roads that don't freeze instead of replacing them every year.

Don't have to worry about snow!

If the contractors aren't being held responsible someone needs to be. The Haggerty road project by my home was just finished Nov of last year. It already has MASSIVE potholes. Someone is doing a shitty job somewhere. It's a waste of tax dollars if a resurface doesn't even last 6 months.

There is a lot of design that goes into MDOT roads but a lot of the counties and communities we have worked with use boilerplate pavement design and you are right, their specs are very outdated.

MDOT wants a limestone base on the majority of there jobs.... Why I ask? Michigan owns the limestone quarries down in Monroe and we pick it up for roughly $25 a yard! VS recycled crushed concrete for $5 a yard.... IMSO crushed concrete compacts stronger then limestone, drains water better and a savings of $20 a yard would cut the prices on a ton of MDOT projects.
A community we do concrete for, there road specs are, hog clay out 42" deep, 24" of 1x3', 10" of 21aa gravel, 8" of cement. Drain tile and wire mesh. You can land a 747 on there roads.
Original hack....oops I meant builder, slapped 8" concrete rite on top of the clay 15 years ago and now it's all busted up

Does anyone drive any roads that they actually think they will be able to drive their cars on this year? I haven't found any, and I'm wondering how the actual fuck I'm going to enjoy my car this season.

I worry about my Jeep in some of these potholes.. I have seen a few on 696 that I'm sure if you hit them going 70 mph you'd be in big trouble as well as the people around you! I'm planning on moving to the west side within the next 2 months because I am dredding the potholes getting worse as well as the road construction season I would encounter during an hour drive to and from work!

Whatever the solution is, we need to fix it. Now. There will be many times the craters in the earth will be unavoidable because of surrounding traffic.

No bullshit, just figure out exactly what it's going to cost and tell us without sugarcoating it. I don't care if they cut funding from other shit. I expect to raise and educate my own children, I can't go out and adequately pave my own roads.

It's a combination of things.....temp swings, salt and the heavy loads we allow on our roads (almost double any other state).

Permits can be purchased in many states to haul heavy. No 8 axle trailers aren't common very far out of michigan. With these purchased permits most can haul 22k per axle which is 9k pounds more than a 8 axle trailer.
You did state in another post about standards of material used to build the roads which I think has more to do with the condition of our roads today than anything else.
I drive for a living and I'm not looking forward to construction season. Many roads are going to be under construction.

Better sell that beautiful C5 and buy a trophy truck. :lol

I heard on the news radio last week that Michigan spends a billion LESS than most of the surrounding snow states. When Gov. Snyder proposed taxes or fees to raise this money all he got was resistance. I think this problem will be front and center in our state in the next few weeks.

Travelling I-96 everyday through Redford and Livonia...... all I can think is that I'm happy I no longer ride a cycle.

I was thinking the same but at least there is more lane to choose from. I can't wait to ride. I may be plotting out the best roads just to get places.

I'm down in phoenix right now, and I'm considering going and renting a bike tomorrow just to ride, I don't care if it's a scooter

Just wait until the freeway is closed and you have to take any of the other pothole filled roads...with twice the traffic!
