Possible to overspin an Alternator?

I have a 3g set-up on my 86 mustang and last weekend I threw the alternator belt off of it. Its been mis-aligned for some time and the extra rpms last weekend did the belt in. Well the Alternator was bought new and has maybe 300 miles on it, if that. I re-did the bracket and put a new belt on and I started the car and its only putting out 11 volts(basically isnt working). Could I have broke the alternotor with the extra rpms?

possibly. i'd pull the regulator off the back, the brushes come off with it. see if they turned blue or other signs of overheating. could have fried the regulator too. i'd guess momentary siezing may have caused you to throw the belt.

It is definatly possible, i have had a few customers break alternator cases because of over spinning them. I know most aftermarket units are rated between 10k-15k pulley rpm, I am unsure about stock units

call me ryan i'll get you set back up:_slide_:

I have seen the windings centrifugally unwind with high RPM.

the alt is good to around 19-22 thousand rpms. the hard part is finding out pullie ratio. most racing setups are 2 to 1 ratio. if the engine is spinning 7000 the alt will spin 14000. that's for the newer units the older ones are around 14-15 thousands.

Dont know were u live, but on auburn road around dequindere is madison starter and alternator, they can put it on their machine, tell you exactly what kind of power if any its putting out, and fix it for you if need be.
