Pool guys come on in. can't figure this out

I have an above ground pool with a doughboy pump and filter. its probably 4-5 years old. Anyways I hooked everything up and I just dont seem to have that great of pressure. I replaced my sand a few years ago. What happens is that I hook up my vacuum and it works ok for about 2-3 minutes and then the suction is just gone. I will do a backwash and it will be fine again. I'll run the vacuum again and it will be good for a few minutes and die again. I dont see any leaks from my hoses.

I could lubricate all the o-rings....I am missing an o-ring on the backwash outlet but i have it capped off any no water comes out of it.

Is my pump dying or is there something i'm missing?
 
I have learned to replace my sand every season.
Also helps with the Ph levels with fresh sand.

For how much is cost for sand and the time to change it. It is a no brainer to me.
 
Check the pump and make sure there are no pine needles or twigs from leaves stuck in the impeller.

I have to clean pine needles out of parents probably every other year.
 
Also, my sand filter (also doughboy) has a Pressure guage on it. What PSI is it at that point? Should have 15 lbs min. Also what hp Pump is it?

Pressure is around 25lbs when on filter and goes a little higher on recirculate. When i lose suction it goes over 30lbs. i forget what hp the pump is. Maybe 3/4 hp?

sounds like a sand issue then? Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any sort of guide with this stuff. Also my PH control has been horrible the past few seasons as well.
