Paying for a speeding ticket with exact change

Awesome. I'm surprised they didn't try to detain him for that. Did they finally accept it and move on?

they dont have to accept it.
Here's what the law says: The Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, states: "United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues. Foreign gold or silver coins are not legal tender for debts."

All this means is that the US Federal Reserve system must honor all US currency. As the US Treasury points out, there's nothing in the law that says that private businesses have to accept it for all transactions. If a merchant wants to sell her products in exchange for gold bullion, nothing but dimes minted before 1946, Swedish fish, or Monopoly money, that's her right under the law.

The absence of such a law is how bus lines can legally refuse to accept your dollar bills, gas station clerks can turn their noses up at your $100s, and panhandlers near the Monitor's newsroom can yell at you after you drop a Sacagawea dollar coin in their cup, even though you were just trying to be nice.

Sure he made a statement, but probably not really sticking it to anyone.
He still has to pay this, and whatever other costs suffered by the ticket.
Government will take your money any way they can, pennies, nickels, bills, check or charge, they want it all.

Yea but the best part about it is it took them 3 hours to count the coins. Ha.

The guy sounds like an entitled whiny tool. Wonder how much sand fell out of his vag while he was pouring the buckets of pennies out.

Let's see....residential street. 9 over - that's 34 in a 25...whines about getting a ticket for driving douchably in a residential area, takes it to jury trial, loses, and is pissed? Sounds like he isn't contesting that he did it. He's claiming he didn't endanger anyone...that's his opinion. The law says anything over 25 is dangerous, otherwise the limit wouldn't be 25. So, he broke the law. He got caught. He had a jury of his peers - who did exactly as they should and interpreted the law and properly identified that he was in violation of it. It's not about whether the law is fair - the law is the law and the jury is there to determine if it was broken.

What a jackass

Jury members get paid, probably more than what the fine was. 12 jurors at $20 each, $240 to declare this guy guilty.
