Will a transmission from a 2000 P71 Crown vic work in a 2002 model year? They are both 4r70 transmissions. Found a rebuilt one out of a 2000 for a decent price and I'd like to swap it in my 02. I cant really find anything on the internet about it, other then there are a few internal changes from 00-02.

Go to www.car-part.com and you'll see there's 3 different transmission part numbers listed for the P71. I think you're SOL but you might get lucky if there's an interchange over the model years with the same part number.

I think 98-02 were all identical. 02+ had a lot of updates. I would just make sure any plugs look identical, if it even has any electrical wires on it.

You can swap the internal harness and plug and change the PRNDL switch and change the lever arms. Pretty much thats just about all the differences I am aware. Easy to do.

every trans shop i contacted said it had to be a 98 Specific trans

If think they are confusing the 4l60e which is 98 specific. Now there was a chance in the internals in 1998 in the intermediate one way clutch. but that doesn't effect the bolt up/operation etc.. I'd have to check a few things but I am fiarly certain its a no brainer to bolt in.

the gear ratio change occured during the 95-96 model years. They also changed the direct stub shaft material and you have heat treated and then hardened planets. but the biggest change IIRC is that the tcc pwm valve got changed. but a transgo shift kit to convert it to a on/off and delete the PWM aspect. I think they might have changed the pin out on the harness to. But again, its not a big ordeal to change it.
