Opinions on opening an exotic rental company

Just wanted to check in with you guys to see what you think and maybe get a discussion going.

I have been running the numbers and kicking around the idea of picking up a few exotics & specialty vehicles for the purpose of renting.

I didn't see any places in Detroit that did it and thought there was an opportunity here.

Anybody have experience with doing this?

Do you guys think there would be interest in something like this?

Thanks!

My biggest concern would be the combinations of our roads and the 'No Fucks Given' attitude most have in a rental would leave you with your cars destroyed. I feel like you'd be replacing wheels weekly.

I know my wife looked into something like this one year for my B-day, she wanted to rent something fun and us drive it Chicago for the weekend, but she couldn't find anything.

I think today's affordable muscle cars are too impressive. A 500 horsepower Lamborghini was impressive back when Mustangs made 200 horsepower. Now Mustangs make 520 horsepower and Lamborghinis make 600..

The newer extreme Exotics would never ever be rented out. Porsche 918.. Veyrons...

I think there are people that are more concerned with the status that comes with a Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc.

It is a good idea. I don't know if you ever watch Rob Feretti on you tube. He used to work for a company called Gotham Dream Cars he made a few videos about that business that were interesting. I would say if you offer insurance that covers everything and attach personal insurance you have little to worry about. Sign me up for a 918 rental when you get one in :)

Turo.com has some higher end cars. Since they show you the number of total trips and dates you might be able to see which cars might be worthwhile to do. Nothing crazy exotic on here, in Metro Detroit, but there are some higher end cars.

Ive thought of this before. Buying rebuilt titled and renting them out.

I know some exotic car rentals in Las Vegas, their cars look like shit, dented, scratched, scuffed, torn interior, hell how would I know they're not going to say I did it, cause you cant really see them all.

I forgot that people are that shallow! :) I would then also rent expensive watches and suits for the complete look.

Would Hellcats, Shelby350's with overly loud exhausts systems rent well? Then again..the current college panty dropper is probably the toyota prius. Times are a changing.

I rented from an exotic place in Vegas years ago... Guy working there said they lose one car that just flat out disappears. The collateral was crazy to rent the car, not for damage but more for the disappearing into the desert or Mexico. We're within an hour of an international border or cars going into Detroit only to never been again. Ditto on the no f&cks given attitude on people with rentals. Guy rents a car on Wednesday and spends the night a Milan's test and tune night. It seems like a lot risk of risk for minimal return. Plus paying someone to do inspections, maintenance, repairs, and the liability insurance. I like the idea but damn I can't see it working. Also this seems very seasonal, I'd be curious about the numbers that show an roi....

You got a point Darko... some people will spend the monies just for the status of driving one.... its catering to a crowd with large incomes..... who locally would be your competition?
Tamper proof cameras and inexpensive tracking devises (insurance companies use these) would assure the renter follows the rules regarding excessive speeds or abuse .... or pay a very large surcharge.

Some of the prices people are asking on Turo, you wonder just how much coke they are doing. TWO Toyota Avalons asking $270/day. A 2009 911 Carrera, not an S, not a 4 or 4S or a GTS or a Turbo, $599/day.

Even in Vegas you can no longer rent a superbike. I talked to 6 rental agencies and a rental veteran explained that its just a losing game.. bikes are wrecked or stolen regularly. Now in San Francisco I could rent superbikes...more mature crowd with the necessary income is what I was told.
