Opinions on a 79....

Ford Mustang? I don't hear too much about that year, and would like some opinions please!

All that I know right now is that it is an automatic, has exhaust, some motor work, has a line lock.

I will find out more specifics tonight hopefully, but figured I'd get a head start on opinions. I looked that year up, and read the HP numbers were under 200. But does the car have potential for that 302? Don't flame me please, I know nothing of this car!

what do you need to know? its the same car as all of them till 93. same parts work on all of them.

best looking fox by far (pace car).

got the not as common front end (plus)
possible aluminum bumpers (plus)
coolest fox taillights (plus)
poss. manual steering and brakes (plus)
cool low mount door handles (plus)
still a bellybutton car but its a outty not a inny :specool:
 
me and adam351 were just talking about these tonight. that was the highest production year for the mustang. it was a little under 370,000 units produced.
but i really don't see many of them for sale or out on the road compared to the other years?
 
There are rumors that they are heavier because older foxes were made when they put more metal in cars....but I find that hard to believe. I just rebuilt an 81 Mustang, and while making it a shell, and stripping the paint to the metal and such...I think they are lighter. The floors and quarters didn't seem as much metal as my 91 that I also rebuilt two years ago. Noth were solid, it's just that the 81 seemed more tinny.

I'm not a race car guy, so I don't care about how much my car weighs and dropping weight, but I just thought I would add that.

Other than that, if it's a solid car...get it. People jump through hoops to get their hands on a 79 because it's the first year for it.

yep '79 was the best sales year for 79-93 (92 was the worst ever)

a lot of these cars have been used up and it seems the few that are left get nose swaps

79-82 Mustangs (when not nose swapped) will stand out in a sea of Mustangs as you don't see many around. 79 Pace cars, 79-81 Cobras and 82 GT's even more so. :thumbup:
 
The motor wasn't a roller, though. Keep that in mind, and the rear was a 7.5 stock. Roller motor didn't come in until 1985. Same with the 8.8 rear I think.

Plenty of potential in it.
 
85 Mustangs still have the 7.5....correct...but 83-85 also had the option for horizontal shocks...better known as quad shocks. Quads on V8 models, non quad housings in 4cyl models. Then they got smart and put the brackets on all housings, instead of making two different ones.

My yellow car is an 81...converted to all 87-93 stuff. I know, I know, I know...but the car was complete junk when I got it, and I didn't have all the 79-82 stuff to make it right, just some of it, and I had all the 87+ stuff. Not to mention, I didn't like the look of the 81 style.

At least I helped many 79-82 owners out by selling most of everything I had to them to make theirs right.

What is a roller? You have to remember that I'm new to these cars!! :sad:
 
And is the fact of it being an Automatic of any concern? I usually hear that the manual transmissions are better for racing in most cases....I personally don't know how true that is. Maybe it was just the people that have said that's preference.

I would say sticks are more fun on the street, but not as good a choice as a auto at the dragstrip.
