can any one reccomend a scanner that can be bought locally? harbor freight, autozone... not looking for an expensive snapon brand.
 
Just to read engine dtc's? American branded or all obd 2 compliant vehicles?
Actron or the dongle/android app for simple retrieving.
 
Grab a bluetooth OBDII scanner and the Torque app if you're on Android. Works very well. Should cost ~$30 for everything.

What he said, the app will do what you need. I have been using Torque for over a year now with a scanner off Amazon, never let me down so far.

x3.. it does a lot more than the parts store specials and it's just a step down from a Mac or Snap on. It does data logging as well. Can't go wrong for $30.

Yea, getting the Modus and Solus to connect to the vehicles seem to be the biggest pain. Once you get that, everything else is smooth lol.

You cant really beat the cheap code reader with no options. Plug it in, get your code, clear it and you are done. If you want to know anymore than the code, you are kind of screwed tho.


I wanted something that I could use for a bit more of diagnostics, so I spent the money on the Microscan. I like it but the Snap-on software for updates is a bitch. I cant get it to work on my computer or I cant get the scan tool to communicate with the laptop etc so I cant update to scan newer vehicles. Blah
