Not a Good day at Milan......

most D/R cars use the 8.8 still. now the hit isnt as hard to the driveline as it is with a stick, but its still pretty violent. and the tire shake is far worse than a stick car leaving.

not to insult you anyway Steve, but you broke in the gear right? is there a special process for break in after they were cryo'd and Mikronited? it was pretty chilly last night, did you warm the drive train up? i believe i read before that you did warm the car up. its is always possible that the gear was defective.

if you like driving the stick, try another gear. i have a 4:10 you can have if you want it. not what you need but you can get the car back out. the th400 is the way to go for less breakage. with what you have in your stick set-up you could sell it all and pick up a 400 with plenty to spare.

Hey Anthony,

Not insulted in anyway. The questions you brought up are logical. Every time I take the car out to make some hits I always do the following including this time. We only have a 35 minute drive so keep that in mind.

1. Warm the engine and driveline up on jack stands at the house before we leave.

2. once at the track I warm the engine up first to around 100 degrees of oil temp.

3. After the engine is warm I drive the car around the pits to bring the oil temp up to ~175 or so. This usually takes several laps around the pits. So there should be plenty of temp in the driveline by this point.

4. Go thru tech

5. Shut it down replace warmup plugs with a fresh set and go make a hit.

As for the break in of the gear....I am very strict about breaking in new driveline components, especially this time since I had a new clutch, and entirely new rear end. I put nearly 200 street miles on the car prior to this trip to the track to be sure everything was seated in. Hell, DTS said that due to the processing that I had done to the gears "there is no break-in needed. Go out and hammer it!". As much as I wanted to believe him, I still had to break in the clutch anyway.

I really do not know what I am going to due at this point, besides car DTS first thing tomorrow A.M.

Sorry to hear, Steve. I broke something too. Something inside the motor... So, you're not alone, but I wish you were:bowrofl:

Wow...what brand gears are you using? I've never had any issues, hell there used to be a SSO guy who went 7's on an 8.8.

i was thinking the same thing, i know of a few stick cars that have been 9s, 1.28 60ft with motorsport gears and never broke one. oj car went 9.60s and didnt break a gear. 8.8s can be stong if you do them right.

When I had a stick I went 1.38/1.39 a handful of times before I put in the c4 and never had an issue. I've always used motorsport gears.....

You're hitting the driveline really hard though with that big launch rpm so who knows.

Last year it went in the 1.33x's several times before it broke and the year before that. This year with all of the added crap I had done to the 8.8, it was supposed to have been able to take it. I wasn't looking for a miracle here, I just wanted it to hold up to what I told them I was going to do with it.

I have already spoken with them this A.M. and I have to bring the Axle assembly to them. They are actually going to drive down this way so I don't have to make the complete drive to Ionia. I don't think they were out to screw me, I think it may have been a material failure (improper alloy or heat treat, etc.), and they seem to be on the same thought. We'll see what happens.

I asked if a 9" was needed for running my car N/A as I really don't have to go that much faster any time soon, and they said nope, "we have plenty of guys going A LOT faster than you with an 8.8". Their biggest concern was the 31 spline axles that I had and the 60ft's the car was pulling, so I had them put 33's in it and at that point I might as well get all the good stuff I could, so I did. The assembly consisted of the following:

- Jig straighted and welded axle tubes
- added support bracing from axle tubes to center section
- 9" housing ends
- Solid spacer in place of crush washer
- Strange Engineering Pro Series 33 spline axles (flange lightening option as well)
- Strange Engineering Ultra light 33 Spline spool
- Main studs
- 4.56 gears, cryo'd and Mikronited
- Strange pro series drag brakes

Bla bla bla bla 5 speed bla bla bla. My dick is bigger than yours because I have a 3rd pedal in my car bla bla. Put a T400 in it. Slap a plate under the carb. Then spay that little beotch until it begs for mercy. Then thow out the scrap aluminum that used to resemble pistons, buy lower compression slugs, and build a turbo motor.

Inglewood Jack!!!!!

Man......With friends like you, who in the phuck needs enemies?!?!?!

Aren't you supposed to be sensitve to my already fragile ego????

Hopefully Hutch won't be too bad ($$$$)...

If you aint breaking shit you aint running it hard enough. You'll get it sorted out. I hated trading my 5 speed for a slush box too. But my budget likes the auto!

And thanks to these guys for lending us the jack and jack stands!!! We could not roll the car until we got it in the air and cleaned the junk out of the housing.

Well, finally some good news....

DTS just called and they are going to 100% stand by their product!! The gear was bad and should not have broken so they are rebuilding the rearend with new 4.56's that will again be cryo'd and Mikronited at their expense. :woot:

Now to make room for the automatic!!!

still gonna use a 4.56 with the auto?

Yeah, we really do not know where to start, but the logic is something of this sort:

1. We know the 4.88 and the 5 speed was a bit much, not terrible but not optimal.

2. We never got the chance to see how it reacted to the 4.56's with the 5 speed.

3. A buddy of mine with a N/A 306 runs 10.20's @ 132 with a C4, 5000 stall, and 4.56's he goes thru at 7400 or so. He shifts at 76-7800 so he was going to switch to a 4.88

4. Another friend has 420W and runs 9.80's @ 136 with a C4, 5500 Stall and 4.30's. He shifts at 7600 or so, and goes thru around 7300.

Using the above information, we decided on 4.56's because the car would likely need less gear than the higher winding 306, but more gear than the torque havin' SOB 420W.

They want me to start with a 5800 stall, and shift at 7300, with any luck the car will trap around 7500 or so. I do not expect it to be spot on right out of the gates. This automatic shit is new to me and I am somewhat of a phuckin' retard when it comes to them.

Congrats. Glad to hear they're standing by their product!
