Noob question here for the carb guys

Is it possible to detect knock on a carb'd engine that isn't running and sort of engine management systems?

Yes, there are stand alone knock gauges/displays. Or you can do it yourself with a knock sensor, gauge, and 12v source.

No particular engine. I was just wondering if there are knock sensors and gauges that can be hooked up to a carb'd engine with no EMS.

Sure but without a way to condition the noise detection they are all pretty much useles.

I think you can DETECT knock, but the vehicle wont correct itself like an EFI car will...as far as i KNOW

A knock sensor is a glorified microphone. It hears all the noise the engine makes. the problem is without a noise profile filtering scheme for a engine similar to the one you want to retro fit the knock sensor will show all sorts of noise.

The easiest arrangement in thoery would be the remote knock sensor module system used on GM TBI cars and trucks. I have most of the data one those.

Again the issue is that the sensor will hear everything and without a filterting scheme that works for the engine in question the data reported back will most likely be false.

I have seen the GN guys running knock gauges, I assume someone sells a sensor and gauge kit, likely autometer

The guage works off of the factory knock module.

you would need the following

Knock sensor
Knock Module
Display guage
Knock Module Wiring Harness plug
Knock sensor wiring harness plug

If someone wants the schematics let me know.

Perhaps a better question is:

is knock detection really necessary for a carb'd car?

I don't know a TON about tuning an EFI car, and nothing about tuning a carb'd car, but I watch my tuner guy tune my current EFI car and knock is super important.

I guess the more important part is how a carb gets tuned.
