Need thoughts on ebay buyer situation. Sold my car this week but having bad feeling

Your instincts, the advice from your credit union, and Ebay all line up. Is there really a question here?

My wife was in banking for 23 years. I just gave her the scenario. Her reply was: For a wire transfer you have to supply your account number and the routing number. This is all they need to clean you out!! Don't do it!! How they "pull it back" is to wait a few hours, then using the account and RTN, they pull their money and yoursright back.
These 2 numbers are on the bottom of every check you write...if this was the case, everyone would be getting their accounts cleaned out left and right...

A wire transfer is safest. When I bought my Super Duty, I was going to wire transfer the funds, the only thing my bank told me was that once it went through, I couldnt get my money back so if the guy disappeared, id be screwed.

I took a wire transfer when I sold my Supercharger on ebay I did not want to eat the 3% fee. No problems whatsoever with it.

Wire transfer is the safest method. My bank has a different routing # for incoming transfers. It is impossible to fake a wire transfer. The money comes from the federal reserve not from the other bank.

<--15 years worth of banking experience. Wire transfer into a new savings/checking account that you open to use for this transaction soley. Wires can only be sent on guaranteed funds. When you receive the funds, move them to your primary existing account. End of thread.

new savings/checking account that you open to use for this transaction soley./QUOTE] Why? What are the ways that a wire transfer could be reversed?

Dennis

It's not so much that it can be reversed, but a wire goes to your account number and the bank's routing number. Those 2 numbers allow a lot of information that most people don't want to give up. You can do a ton of damage with a routing number and corresponding checking account number.

Thanks for all the input. I spoke to the guy today and got more info on him and his business. He explained his situation as the buyer and I feel more comfortable with the deal. I'm going to go to my credit union on monday to get a copy of the title with the lien on it, and make an invoice for the sale. The account I have there was only setup to be able to get a loan. Once the money is clear, I get my cash, I'm going to close the account. Or I might ask them about setting up a secure incoming transfer account.

What advice do you guys have as far as writing a reciept/invoice for the buyer. Just to cover my ass for the future. Thanks again.

Here's the website that the guy gave me. Apparently he buys a lot of mustangs and other american cars and ships them to switzerland. I can't understand the language but knowing that it's not Nigeria only makes me feel a little better.

I Joe Somebody (Seller) sold to John Doe (Purchaser),
this day June 24, 2012, One 1997 Ford Mustang, VIN #

released upon cleared / confirmed funds.

This vehicle is sold as is, where is, and is not guaranteed or
warranted, expressed or implied in anyway. By making
payment the purchaser acknowledges, accepts and agrees
to the terms of this sale.

Thanks for the sample. I usually just scratch up some shotty receipt on a napkin when the person comes to my house, but this time I just might fire up the ol' word processor and make it look legit.

Well after two weeks I decided to cancel the whole thing with ebay.
The guy never made the paypal deposit within 48 hours. Then he was very hard to communicate with due to travel and language barriers. After 2 tries to wire the money were unsuccessful (partly my fault for missing a number in the routing number and a miz up with the account) he had his wife trying to do it through their bank of america account but they are in switzerland until next week. Anyways long story short, I decided to pull te plug on the deal and just wait to sell it local. I'm gonna close the savings acct that i gave him the number to just in case. I know the guy was legit, but it was just a communication thing.
