Need some modular motor help ASAP...

EDIT: The car had a bad Inline Fuel Pump- Car runs great now!!



So I went to look at a 96 Cobra (Mystic)today, the car has a vq-s trim kit on it and just recently a 03-04 6 speed installed.

Here is the problem, the car starts breaking up really bad around 4500-5k rpms and basically won't go any higher, the guy has receipts upon receipts from Lidio including tune & blower installation, the car idles and runs good but doesn't seem to make good power? The blower makes a small grinding noise while idling, he said it was just recently rebuilt by Vortech, also he blames the car for breaking up because of the recent trans swap, he doesn't have the converter box for the 6 speed trans to mechanical odometer.

Any info would be great, the car is for sale at a ridiculously low price with only 65k miles and a ton of upgrades (brakes,wheels,stereo system,wheels,etc) so I'm kinda scared something is wrong or the guy doesn't know what he has?

And yes I apologize for using the wrong forum, but I need some helpful answers asap hopefully :icon_mrgr

Why don't you tell me where its at and I'll let ya know - haha - Stay away from the mod motors didn't you learn your lesson . Go Fox body and pushrod and you'll be fine.
 
Well I seen the dyno graph and the car is only making 390rwhp so it's a real conservative tune, but the car doesn't seem to want to go above 5k rpms?

How bad is the grind in the blower????????


I would say if its cutting out around 4.5-5 its more then likely the tune then again I also had a issue with my TPS sensor also :shrug:

I found it driving around Southfield on my lunch brake ;), but seriously the guy is asking 8500 obo with 65k and a blower, so it seems to good to be true

It's not a bad grind, it's periodical not continious
 
have him take it back to lidio. if he has all these reciepts from there, i am sure lidio would have NO problem looking at it.

if its too good to be true, it usually is.

if the blower has been back to vortech recently. call them. they record everything about the stuff they rebuild. they might have an idea. and it would still be under the rebuild warranty, for the cost of shipping.....send it back


i would say it is NOT in the tune, if lidio did it. and if it is (which it isnt) lidio would fix it for free. assuming nothing has changed from when it was tuned and it hasnt been that long.

so all that doesnt add up. why would he sell the car really cheap if the problems could be fixed free or for very little $$$ and sell it for what its worth?

The SQ-V2 I purchased used was rebuilt and I sent it again and no problems whatsoever they even sent me a pre-paid postage box!!!!

If the car doesn't have the extended range speed cal. for the 6speed will that cause the car to cut out early?
 
Well I ran a Carfax and the last reported mileage was 19k same owner since 97.Man what a dilema :(
 
What about spark blow out?

Would anyone as an owner be offended if someone purchasing a car wanted to do a comp. check? What kind of #'s should I get?
 
i wouldnt be offended one bit if you wanted to do a compression check, as long as the guy isnt trying to hide anything there shouldnt be a problem

does this car have an msd ignition on it? and also check what plugs he has in it and what there gapped at

The car has the complete SQ kit with stock injectors & a Vortech FMU,T-Rex pump. I'm gonna do a comp check tomorrow if he'll let me and while I'm at it better check the gap, it may be a quick fix and a lucky find :)
 
stock injectors??? how many lbs of boost?? ive never had a blower car but i almost always see 36 or 42 pound injectors. maybe its running out of fuel up top??

The car has the complete SQ kit withstock injectors & a Vortech FMU,T-Rex pump. I'm gonna do a comp check tomorrow if he'll let me and while I'm at it better check the gap, it may be a quick fix and a lucky find :)


That may explain the conservative tune and lower numbers. I(f it was tuned for a different trans it is possible it may just need a retune. You may want to check everything just to be safe.. Good luck
