Need some haircut help

I'm new to the whole me using clippers and cutting my own hair but I am trying to find some decent clippers thats not going to give me a baldhead/buzz cut. I do not know what length I usually get at the barbershop but I usually get a taper that is cut pretty close but to where I still can brush my hair slightly....

Anyone know a decent set of clippers and about what length blades I should use?? Use to get my haircut on Mack and Alter Rd but now that I am in Kalamazoo I am really not feeling the barbers to much. Any help would be appreciated because I am not trying to spend over 50 bucks on the clippers and it ends up not being nothing close to what I want.

Go check Meijers or Wal-Mart. They sell clippers similar to what is used at the barber shop. Wahl is a good brand. My mom used to cut hair when I was younger. She got me a set of those when I used to buzz my own sides in college. Another place to check would be a local beauty supply store like Sally Beauty Supply. They sell the higher end clippers that most salons use. You may find the taper attachments for the clippers there. If the clippers at the stores don't have the attachment you are looking for.

As for length, I use a 1 on my sides. You may use a 2 or 3 if you brush your hair. I think 1 ia like 1/8", 2 is 1/4", etc. You will see different comb attachments for the clippers and can probably figure out what you need. Good luck.

I went to the places you named but mostly saw either cheap or expensive clippers and did not know which is best to use. The beauty supply had clippers for like 60 and up is what he called "the good ones".

A decent clipper feels solid and a little heavy. You can try a cheaper one and see how long they last if you are tight on $$. Just may need to replace them down the road if they wear out.

A good set will also require oiling of the blades and usually come with the oil. I would not buy a set that did not require that. They will be worn out and broken in no time.

I dont think Al cuts his own hair so he wont be much help. I bought some clippers from Meijers last year when I was just buzzing my hair.

How the hell do you guys taper your own hair?! I could see if you were doing one length all over, but I would never have thought anyone does anything more complicated than that on themselves. Shit, I had a 1 in 10 chance of getting a decent haircut from the chicks at Borics when I used to go there and they supposedly know what they're doing.

I have tried this recently and being new to cutting my own hair really has me boggled at times when I try to taper...definitely a challenge...im still practicing..
