One of my buddies has a 95 Explorer with a 4.0 in it. He said that the starter was bad on it, so he wants me to fix it. 1st time trying to fire it up, the engine rolled over for a half second then stopped, and everytime after that it just clicked. Well since he had the starter I figured I would give it a shot and see what happened. One of the connectors broke while I was pulling it off, so I fixed it.
I go to hit the key and it rolls over really really slow for about 2 seconds, now it clicks. Pulled the starter back off, hooked my power probe up and manually hit the starter. The bendix came out all the way and it spun fine. Hooked it back, hit the key and same problems as before. I then put a socket on the crank and tried to spin the engine over . . . Nothing, could not get it to budge. Will not turn forward or backwards.
I have heard that the 4.0's have problems with the converters ballooning and locking them selfs to the flywheel, but I have never seen it myself. Im thinking that that either happened, or he spun a a bearing and it locked itslef sideways, thus not letting me roll the engine over.
Heres what I know:
- Starter is fine
- Wiring going to the starter is good
- Engine will not spin over period
- Their was no trans dipstick in the fill hole
- Pressureized the coolant thinking maybe head gasket and it hydo locked itself. But coolant held pressure forever with no problems.
- Customer started car for a week with problems. Slow cranking, clicking with eventualy starting and Loss of power right before he started having all the starting issues.
If anybody has any suggestions on what I should try next, anything would be appreciated. I wanted to disconnect the flywheel bolts and try to spin the engine over that way (To see if the engine is locked up or if it is the trans), but I cannot get the engine to roll over far enough to be able to get the flywheel bolts out.
Thanks,
Sean
