Need Help - Transmission Fluid

Long story short, I took my car into the dealership this morning for something brake related. They check all my fluids. They show me my trans fluid and it is BLACK (looked darker than my oil - which needed to be changed).

I am told, this is not good. I am told they can do a transmission fluid flush but that it will cost me $160 - on top of what I am already paying for other things.

I tell them thanks but no thanks, I can always take it back there if I can't find someone else to do it.

Does anyone know where I can get a trans flush for less than $160? Not looking for any freebies, just some recommendations on some reputable places that may not charge an arm & leg.

OR - do I really even need one if the car seems to be running fine?
Shouldn't technicians be checking this when I get an oil change? I just had one in September (low mileage driver) and they didn't say anything to me about this. Can it go that bad that quickly?

I have just over 32k miles and my lease is up in 6 months.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance!

If it is black, you need a two stage flush - first get on one of those fluid exchangers. I am usually opposed to doing it that way, but in this case you need to clean the convertor too. After that, drop the pan and change the filter and the fluid again.

Some oil changes places will do the swap for $60 or so, then do the pan yourself.

IT's a lease?? Fuggggggitttt about it

Shit, if it is a lease, then they should be doing it under warranty. I think GM gives you 100,000 miles on your trans fluid, so I am sure Ford does something similar. Be careful, though, if you were supposed to change it and your trans gets toasted, they might not cover the trans.

x2!

I take my truck in for an oil change (bait and hook coupon) they try to hit me up for all kinds of shit...
"you need the 15K mile service $170"...You need to shut the fuck up!, It's a lease... it doesn't belong to me, why would I put money into a car I'm RENTING from you?

Its the leasee's responibilty to maintain the vehicle. Depending on you yearly milage some car be out of warranty before the lease is over

what kind of vehicle?

It is a 2005 Mazda 3

I have had it for just (by 3 days) over 36 months, but i am under 36000 miles. they told me this was not covered under warranty. it is a 42 month lease, so i am rid of it beginning of August.

thanks for all the help guys!

That's my temptation, but what is the likelihood that my trans is going to fry within the next six months? If that happens, then I am screwed.

I am not an overly aggressive driver and very low mileage. I am just trying to see if I can justify the cost - if not then I am not going to do it.

Pray it hangs on. Changing fluid like that can have disasterous consequneces.

Midas does trans fluid flushes. I would be cautious of doing that because the fluid right now is holding your friction for your clutches. after you flush that out you have no more holding power. OR you might get lucky.

OR get an early lease turn in :D

she drives like a granny... seriously!

she has about 10,000 miles to go to max out the mileage allowed by the lease by August.

you need to contact someone at the dealer that knows what their talking about and bring a bonified car mechanic with you.
