My latest weak moment

I picked this up recently. Needs a little TLC, but I couldn't walk away from it and the deal. I must have 'pack-rat' built into my genes.

Plated for Michigan!!! 1961 Unimog 404.1. 2.2l straight 6 gas engine (for now :secret: ), manual trans, locking portal axles, 40" tractor tires. Canvas convertible top isn't installed right now. The radio box (think camper box) isn't on it right now, and I probably won't put it on, going for a flatbed or caged bed.

No, the bed liner sitting on the back isn't for the truck. I had to take it out of my pickup for the road trip to Colorado I did this week.

i like where your head is at. gas engine, for now. hell yes. where the hell would you find a diesel MB motor for it though? or are you some sort of loony toon that would put a powerstroke in it or something?? :smokin:
'cause i could get behnd something like that, for sure. ive always wanted either a mog or a pintz.

I thought about doing an engine transplant to something more modern, but I don't know if I want to replace the trans every time I take it out. MB diesel is an option, but then it's still top speed limited to about 55 as you run out of revs.

Letting the cat out of the bag a little early, I am getting a set of stainless exhaust flanges made in the next few weeks. :thinkerg: Mounting an intercooler is going to be a bit tricky in this thing, but that won't come to life until after the company I work for comes out with a good retrofit/stand-alone EFI system. Gotta rock it for a while without cracking into it to heavily.

youtube unimog. they're like half tractor, half truck. if i remember right, they came about shortly after WWII, to help rebuild europe. they are/were the workhorse of europe. they still make them today. but you can get them with those power hook ups. i cant remember what they're called. but you can run actual snow blowers, cranes, saws, etc. attachments can connect to the front, or the back in many cases. what the hell are those called? hydraulic and electric connection. lol, whatever. they are beasts offroad. and you see old ass ones being used all around the world for all sorts of reasons. 3 locking diffs. some of them have 2 reverse gears. amazing ground clearance. tractor tires, etc. theres a few places that import them and sell them. they're like specialized ex-military vehicles. once the trucks are discharged, they are sold. much like the old styr puch pinzgauers and halflingers.

The one in this video is a 406, which is larger and has a diesel engine than the one I have. But this video has me convinced it was a good move.

Gotta find some PTO driven hydraulic winches now. hrm....

I wanna go for a ride when this thing is done..shit I'll go now! I just thought of this. Why isn't this someones getaway vehicle in a movie? How awesome. Shit, I'll just climb this wall.
