My journey into home automation

Looks like you're focusing on a personal assistant as opposed to home automation.

I've been using zwave crap for a little over a decade. Before that, it was x10. I also used to use 1wire stuff. For zwave, it started with a Harmony 890 Advanced zwave remote for dimming lights and whatnot.

Today I have a Vera Edge.

It turns my chicken coop heat lamp on when it gets cold out. Same for the chicken water heater and a lamp that dims over 30 minutes like the sun, so they lay eggs year round. The lights outside based on motion and separate lights based on schedule. It has water sensors in the basement and will turn off the water if it detects a leak. I have it hooked up to my Nest thermostat, but largely the Nest is used entirely independently and we normally heat with wood anyway.

I have the normal indoor home automation stuff. TV is still all el-manual but oh well. I'll get back to that someday.

I would like to hook up my garage doors to the Vera but they are still separate. I use the Liftmaster app to remotely control them. I would also like to find a vacuum that I can control with the Vera. That way I can schedule it about an hour before I get home to vacuum so then the pets only have to listen to the damn thing chime that it's stuck for an hour at the most. I would also like to integrate my cameras (I use iSpy) so that if two cameras detect motion then Vera would turn on all the interior lights and exterior lights of the house.

Are you asking if a single switch can control multiple units? if so, no. They sell packs of the switches though I don't see much if any of a discount for buying them in bulk. You can buy multiple ones and then get a face plate with 3 holes. It's the same type of width you'd have for a sliding dimmer

I went out and actually purchased a few of the wall sockets you posted above. Super easy to setup with the app on your phone.
I didnt get to mess around to long. I did try to set an "away mode" to have certain things turn on this morning and off at a set time. Which it didnt appear to work. Thinking i just did something wrong, but we'll see.

Going to have the same problem Google has. It's late to the game and playing catch up.

Just wanted to give ya a thank you Ryan. After reading thru this just randomly one day and seeing your links and such i actually went and purchased some of both the plugs and the switches. Plugs were obviously easy no big deal. I wired in 2 switches last night to control my porch lights and garage lights. Pretty simple thing there! Its awesome to be able to control it all by my phone and have timers set up when needed. With how early it gets dark around here now, walking into a dark house always sucked. Even the front of the house being dark i hated. These solved those issues.
Appreciate the post!

Yup. There's a ton more you can do with getting WiFi enabled garage door openers etc...

I've been playing with IFTTT, but its reliability is shoddy at best and there's no real backend support.

all this stuff is pretty cool. Do they make the light switches in more then just 1? For example i have a 3 light switch setup next to my front door.
Hall light, Garage light, porch light.

I think this is what your looking for. This is a wemo switch.

oh yea i found them online all day lol. I picked up the switches and installed them that night. (im impatient) No local lowes/home depot had that style. They dont stock much more then the basic stuff. Its all good. I just did all 3. Worked out nicely.

BUMP....

Updates anyone?

Also do they make a home automation where if my wife/I walk into a room or out of a room it can automatically detect on what to do in regards turning or shutting off lights?
