My heat is not always working

Have a 99 Cherokee with 135K miles on it. It has a slight radiator leak and I top it off every week. Just noticed the other day in the morning when I used my automatic starter that the heat was blowing cold when I got into the jeep. Only when I gave it gas that the air blowing from the vents went warm. Sound like a thermostat to you guys?

Having a similar issue. My 1993 Mazda 626 v6, AC is perfect, but the heat is a different story. It will only heat up once your driving, like moving. Even if I let it "warm up" outside for 20 minutes it doesn't get warm inside until after your driving.

I'd say the coolant is low, or you have air in the system. I know cherokees have a different cooling system. No cap on the radiator, but only on the overflow bottle? I remember reading a lot about Cherokee guys having issues like this.

I'd look for a bleed screw somewhere on the engine side of the thermostat, or start it with the cap off, and let it get warm. Keep the heat on high and add coolant once the thermostat opens and the level suddenly drops. Then I let the temperature stabilize after adding the new cold coolant. Once I know the thermostat is still open, I throttle it up a little by hand which usually drops the level slightly. I top it off with coolant with the R's up a little and put the cap back on.

But like stated earlier, a partially clogged heater core could also be the problem as well. The water pump pushes coolant harder with rpm, and can force it's way through a clumped up core. My opinion is based on the coolant leak you have.

4.0l jeeps have the issue that was described above. when air gets in the system its really tough to get it all out. seeing that you have a leak its going to continue to happen. id first guess air in the system and next to that its clogged.

Any input for my problem?
