My car started chugging and shut off

just started a few days ago but its been chugging while im driving. very inconsistant only about once a day its happened about 3 or 4 times usually happens after about 5-10 minutes of driving once the cars warmed up it seems... Ive also had a problem where as soon as i turn on the car it revs right up to like 1500-2000 rpms just sitting there but when i put it in first and let the clutch out it goes right down... im thinking possibly a fuel pump? fuel filter or spark plugs/wires i cant put my finger on it if anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Carb or EFI

Did the car sit for a while?
If Carb, sound as though your Carb could possibly use a rebuild or did you mess with the Idlers, any vacuum leaks, how is your timing?

bad batch of gas is what im thinking, its fuel injected and yes its an 86 mustang and its EFI. My step brother is a mechanic and told me its probably just a bad batch of gas im gunna buy some dry gas and see if that will cure my tank
 
sounds to me like THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. Unplug the TPS and see if it makes anydifference, if it doesnt then it is bad, if it does it's probably good. next try the IACV unplug it and see if that makes a difference if it doesnt youve found your problem. Some times the IACV can be cleaned and lubricated.
 
Ill have to take a look at it this weekend with my dad, I'm still a little uncomfortable taking apart my car without someone coaching me but i appreciate the tips.
 
Clean the IAC then see if that makes a difference

Then try the TPS Sensor they for around $26-34 and take about 2 minutes to swap
