WEEK 2:

sandblasted, welded, sealed, finished roof, finished undercarriage (camera batteries died before I could snap undercarriage)
The passenger door will get a new outer skin this week
The drivers door will get a small patch
Gave the paint code to the painter, he'll get paint this week

the other car is a '55 chevy.. the owner is having his 55, 56, 57, 58 restored.. maybe he has a 59 also.. he has about 30 cars. the undercarriage and engine compartment will look like his firewall.

the tool box is the bodyguys own patented design. at a recent tool show he sold about 20-25 of them at $2200/each. it's come a long way since his first prototype in 1999.

I think next week the door jams, trunk and cowl will be painted.

That will be the last time you'll be seeing that front suspension. I have all new springs, shocks, DISK BRAKE conversion (originally it has 4 drums), A-arms upper and lower, caliper disks etc...
Also bought new rear brakes (all new drums, shoes, springs etc...)

This week he'll be dropping the rear end so I can have it rebuilt (still deciding on gears, which is hard when you haven't nailed down what engine you're going with)

the rear end will be painted with por15. www.por15.com that stuff is amazing

Anyone know anything about that 8" (not 8.8) in the rear of this buggy?

I need to order new rear suspension (lowering the rear 1.5" and the front 1") this week.

It's nice having National Parts Depot minutes away from work.

new metal thus far:

drivers rear 1/4
passenger rear 1/4
Both Full floor boards
Both front Torque boxes
Both front floorboard support/subframe
Both engine compartment aprons (not sure name)
New trunk floor
Different doors (mine were junk)
I'll be picking up a passenger door skin this week
Inner and outer rear wheel wells (both sides)
New fenders NOS
Different hood (mine was junk)

I can't find the original truck lid... but i have another '70 mustang I'm going to scavenge parts from and then sell/give away the shell. It has a real nice truck lid.

Wouldn't it have been more cost effective to start with something solid or already done?

Way to go man, i'd have sent it to the scrapper. :hail:

I'm kinda a perfectionist. (You can tell if you ever saw my lightning)

This way I'll know exactly what lies under the paint. Whoever had the car prior did some shoddy body work. and covered it in ton's of bondo.

It was like driving a piece of Indian Pottery.
Here, the bad is cut out, replaced with new, welded, and smoothed.

It is a big project, but it seems to be moving smoothly thus far.
I figure one weekend suspension, another brakes, another drop engine and trans, another wiring, another exhaust, another interior...

Luckily I have an 80' x 160' barn with plenty of room to work in.

welding body work no - Sanding, of course (manual labor)

wiring is straight forward so I'll do that.
Bolt on stuff is relatively easy (suspension, interior, drivetrain), so I can handle all that.
Rebuilding rear end --> not a chance!
motor and trans I'll buy or have built somewhere, but I can install it.

I'm not painting it, but I'll be wet sanding it.

**EDIT**

I just have to stay focused and motovated and I'll be alright.
I have some friends that I'll be calling in favors that they owe me.

went to www.npdlink.comin canton for lunch and picked up door skins.

I figure I'll have about $10k in to when all is said and done. (body guy is giving me a helluva deal) and the car will appreciate from there. Unlike another Lightning that will continue to depreciate. Don't get me wrong I'm not doing this as an investment, but I should lose too much money when I go to sell it.

Depending on how this restoration goes, I already found another 70 coupe that was restored about 10 years ago, they pulled the motor and gutted the interior. I can probably pick it up for under $1k.

Not be a downer, but Coupes don't bring the big $$$. Unless it's a C/S.

Either way it's very cool project. I'd prefer a "TRUNK" C/S over a Mach anyday. Doing to C/S clone would be cool.

I'm in the process of doing the same on a 67' fastback...a lot of work! I wish you have put in the front tq boxes, I would have a couple questions.

Keep up the good work!

a fully restored coupe should be able to get over 10k

both the front torque boxes are new... that is just surface rust that will be sandblased when he does the engine compartment.

the torque boxes i the front tie into the frone frame rail, the floorboard and a support that goes over to the rocker panel. it is a thick piece of metal.
