95 mustang gt , i was driving it to work today and the trans kept down shifting then shifting back into over drive , it did it once or twice and i didnt think anything of it , then it did it like 4 or 5 times in a row then the check engine light came on then the car died , wouldnt start back up ( had a slow crank ) , had my girlfriend come give me a jump and after a min it started back up , i drove it the rest of the way to work ( like 2 mins ) , any ideas ? alternator or speed sensor ?

mlps ( manual lever position sensor) aode - mine did the same thing for the shifting problem. Im not sure about the slow crank and dieing... the sensor is on the driver side of trans or...maybe fluid level

im starting to think the alternator is and maybe it was the sensors freaking out because they wernt getting the right amount of juice ?

also not sure if this has anything to do with it but my spedo is about 10-15mph off ( 3.73 gear ) but while doing 70mph ( about 55 actual mph ) my engine is at 1k rpm wich seems like it should be atleast 1.5k or higher seeing how its geared

my aode car with 373 is about 1500 rmps( probaably higher) at 70 so your probably right about the speedo. but i dont think its related to the trans shifting problems. I can feel my converter lock up and unlock at 65 mph but that doesnt feel close to down shifting into lower gear. My sesnor went all weird when i ripped my trans mount and cracked the sensor

guy i bought it off of told me there was a stahl converter in it , 1800-2400 rpm or something like that , car does not drive like theres a stahl in it , drives like a normal car ( put it in drive and go )

my cars got a 3200 and drive pretty normal when its warm.

well i got out of work at 2am and it fired right up and i made it about 3/4 way home ( about 10 mins ) , and it died , i made it to a gas station and tried starting it and it cranked all day long like a normal start up but just wouldnt start , the second my girlfriend got there and jumped me it fired right up and made it the rest of the way home ( about 5 mins ) ... im thinking the alternator is toast and i just got lucky enuff that the battery had just enuff juice to get started and make it as far as it did

im going to pull the alternator out and have it tested today if it ever stops raining , i hate tracking down bull shit so i hope thats the problem

put a new alternator in it earlier , it was the problem , previous owner had a under drive pulley on the alt. and a regular pulley on everything else so the alt. fried ( litteraly , there was black soot all over the under side of it that smelled like burning ) all is good now so far , still need to get the car timed thow

fixxed the alternator issue now the trans is still doing a shudder type thing , while in over drive at about 1500rpm after a min the trans litterally down shifts then goes back into over drive then it may do it like 2 or 3 times then wont do it again for a while , then another thing it does is while in over drive the trans will buck kinda like its slipping then catching and will do this a few times as well , is this torque converter shudder ? any other ideas on what it is and how do i fix it ?

Torqueconverter shutter on a ford feels like going over speed bumps.
The bucking your feeling sounds more like a miss fire in the engine.
The trans (this is a 1995?) does not shift itself. It relies on a signal from your vehicles computer. First step is to see if the controller is telling the trans to shift up and down. It most likely is.

yes its a 95 , a few times when it did the bucking the CEL light came on then went right back off once i gave it some gas , so a miss fire will cause the trans to down shift or buck ?
