Mufflers/Exhaust for my 84. Want to change it up...

So as some know, my 84 is under the knife. I am switching mid pipes from an H to an X as I prefer the advantages it offers, and while I am doing it I figure I had might as well swap out the mufflers if not the entire catback. It's currently a Flowmaster system and sounds like every other SBF with a cam out there.

I'm thinking of doing something different. I ran the SLP LM on my 86 and loved the sound of it combined with the X Pipe. That motor was using a stock cam and it still screamed at WOT and on the highway.

Here is what it currently sounds like:

I'm thinking about just swapping mufflers for something a bit more free flowing to save on the cost. Another thing I have always wanted to do was get a set of the Magnaflow mufflers from a Roush car and do a side exhaust of sorts.....but am worried that will reduce my ground clearance that is already minimal!

Any suggestions?

I loved the way my old exhaust sounded and now Mitch will be hopefully ;) the one you commented on about wanting the X-pipe. Those were Dynomax Ultra-Flo's. There's no shortage of clips on my yt channel to get the feel for how it sounded. By far my favorite exhaust sound on my car.

also what does it cost for a run on a chassis dyno ? just to see what you got?

My buddy has a mobile one that he takes to shows all over MI and typically charges $50-55 for 3 pulls w/out wb monitoring. Just straight pulls, no tuning or anything.

Me personally, now that i'm over 40.. ( ) I prefer quiet exhaust. Maybe something with a decent tone but without any interior resonance? Ultra flows are known to be quiet until you get in the throttle if that's what you're looking for.

Do you want it loud and obnoxious or just loud? lol

Some guys say they are cheap quality but I've been eyeballing the pipes violator line...

talk to Scott with the CRX about those pypes kits, i'm pretty sure i remember seeing him post on their FB page about how poorly one fit and i want to say it was for a fox body. i'm not positive but it would be worth shooting him a message on FB about it.

have you thought about a cutout? i had one on the GTP so i could run open DP or stock catback.

maybe gt500 mufflers? those have to flow pretty good and aren't crazy loud unless your on it.

If anything I would just buy the mufflers and use my flowmaster pipes.

I've thought about a cutout but that's more weight and wiring to deal with. GT500 mufflers are sweet but don't fit older mustangs due to the change in exhaust style.

I like my dynomax superturbo, mild and deep till I get on it. Just whatever you do avoid cambered :-P

I have a set of these with a X pipe behind an essentially stock 302. I like it. I figure I will like it more with a 331 and a little cam out front. :-0

Corsa fits the bill as well. No interior resonance but screams at WOT.

Pipes violators are loud as hell, my buddy had a pair on a 69 vette. It was horribly loud. Get ahold of Scott Brown, the guy in Tooslo86's sig. He's a genius when it comes to mufflers. (And cams)
