MSD issue

Having an issue with my ignition.

I originally had a 351w with a Ready to run MSD. ( 9.6:1 compression )
the main issue was that once the car got warm it would not turn over. Cold it would turn over no problem.
called MSD and they said it was the battery ( 900 cca ) and then the starter ( brand new high torque )
then it was that the starter was not grounded. So put a ground from that to the block.
Then it was the alum heads weren’t grounding the spark plugs, so I put a 4 GA ground from each head to the block.
once that was done it would backfire BAD and then fire up and run with a stumble. ( also had a hesitation while maintaining RPM )
MSD gave me an RMA number to rebuild that distributor

Not wanting to wait 6-8 weeks for the turn around, since I haven’t driven my car more then 20 miles this year I bought a 6-BTM box, 8584 distributor

Wired the box in and I have no spark.
Did the troubleshooting in the manual and it checks out ok
While turning the car over I touched the coil and noticed it was HOT… so I swapped in coil #2 MSD blaster ( PN 8207 )

Called tech support and the man told me that I had the switched power wire and coil + reversed.. I disagree but change this, and within a second or two of turning over the coil went up in smoke.

Buy a new ( 8207 ) and put that in with the wires back in the correct configuration……. Nothing.

Now when I jump the green and violet on the distributor harness I can hear the MSD box make a noise, and with a spark plug directly off the coil I get no spark at all.

I swapped out the magnetic pickup in the distributor as that’s the only thing I have not changed at this point…. Still nothing.

Im now over 1800 dollars into this ignition. And still no spark..

Current list of parts ive changed:
3 sets of NGK spark plugs
1 bought set of MSD wires.
1 set of NAPA wires ( was used with the ready to run )
1 set of MSD wires I made from bulk wire and the terminals
3 coils ( 1 REALLY HOT, 1 went up in smoke, 1 in the car now )
1 ready to run distributor
1 MSD 6-BTM box
1 MSD 8584 pro billet distributor
New cap and rotor for the 8584 ( just incase it was that not getting the spark to the plug )
1 magnetic pickup for the 8584
2 sets of advance springs

Im at a loss for words on this.. ive triple checked my wiring and the connections, and have 11.7V on the switched power lead while the engine is turning over.
The GROUND to the box is run to the common ground on the engine… where the heads, and starter are now grounded. That has a 4 GA ground going to the frame side of the engine mount.
MSD suggests the ground go to the battery but with a jumper cable from the neg battery cable to the grounding location there is no difference.

Anyone have any ideas?

You should not need all of those grounds. The heads are most likely grounded thru the head bolts contacting the engine block threads. Extra grounds aren't usually a bad thing as long as the voltage drop across the ground side is low (within 0.1 Vdc)

As for the coil, I have seen people hook up to an incorrect power source and burn the coil up.

The magnetic pickup could be bad but you can check it. Connect a multimeter to the leads of the pickup, spin the distributor and it should create an AC voltage output.

Even if the timing curve is off (improper springs etc) there will still be spark.

Seeing as you have replaced many components its sounding more like the control side of the ignition not an MSD component.

What kind of car are you working on?

68 mustang

brand new harness ( full american auto wire kit )

brand new ignition ( car side )

brand new starter solenoid

the car was JUST finished a full resto in june for my wedding

fusible link cooked itself? If you replaced and added all those grounds, what did you replace as far as positive cables after the tech advised you to rework the wires and smoked out a coil?
