Have a 01 Mustang gt 5speed with bad piston slap pulling the engine and want to upgrade without spending a ton. What are some good mods to do well the engine is out?

Thinking or rebuilding the bottom end to stock with forged pistons. Putting some cams in it such as Comp Cams 102500 the smallest of the xe line with springs to match it. Will probally add some headers and a decent clutch.

car will be a daily driver during the summer

how fast would this be?

Well if you bought a 03 cobra block for 300 i got some je pistons std bore that are brand new id let go for cheap, I also have a forged crank. If you wanted to step up to a cobra motor I have a whole motor in the garage outa my car. I myself wouldnt rebuild a 2v id go to a 4V

no dont want to go with a Cobra Motor. Just want to keep this a simple with a little more get up and go.

Any body know what size the combustion chambers are on stock PI heads?

From past experience, do it once, and don't skimp the first time. If u can't afford rods, wait till u can etc.

^^^^ that is for sure. hell cams are over $500 then when your done you are looking at a tune also which is another $500 there is $1000 right there

I like the 2v because its always looked at as the underdog(which it is) But if i could start all over I'd go with a 4v. Either way you go it will be expensive. Depending what you do with the compression if it were left stock I'd guess 280-290whp and that may be a little on the high side. my 2 cents

Yeah high id say 265-280

if ur ganna keep this thing n/a then either get some pistons or could get trick wizzy and have the chambers welded in and redesign the chamber and would be around 37cc instead like 48ish. and get ur compression up. plus with the redesigned chambers it would be much more efficient. stock isn't even 10:1 thats terrible. if u got it upwards of 11.3ish and some decent camshafts then u would have a decent runnin car!!!!!!!!!!!! we are lookin for 380+ rwhp with my boyz car!!!!

i personally think he could get away with it. we all know the heads flow like shit so make up for it with a couple extra points of compresssion.

Get a used Mark 8 or evfen better Aviator Motor, they go Cheap at junkyards because they never go bad in those cars.

If your stuck on the 2v go at least 11.0-11.5 CR.
you could use 96-98 cobra pistons with your 01+PI 2v heads and that would bump the compression up a bit if your on a budget ;)

But at least look into doing the 4v swap before you sink all your cash into the 2v and realize you should have went to the 4v the first time around.
The heads on the 2v motor are the weekpoint, even the best ported 2v heads cant outflow a Stock set of DOHC 4v Heads.
Cams are a waste unless you plan to spin the motor real high or go power adder.
Not Worth the idle and tunning issues if you ask me for another 13hp...
Remeber, you can always sell the 4v if its not what you want , the 2v however not so much ;)

I myself think its a waste when you can go 4v and pick up a ton money wise

i would also agree that some sweet ported cobra heads would be the way to go. i have seen people make 600+ on motor with a 4v....(not very streetable obviously)

you can make almost 600 on a Stock 4v with a Vortech and still be very streetable.

Back in 99 when I sold my Stock 96 2v motor and bought a 178k mile Mark 8 4v motor for $400 i put a cobra intake and a Vortech with 18psi I made just under 560hp for 2 years before I decided to pull it out and Forge it all for more power :)

I dont know if many on this board can afford this AL Popito(sp) builds some wicked ones but there real pricey your talking the best of the best everything for that kinda power and a stepup to a 5.4
