MGO Down?

almost been a week

Michigan Gun Owners Website Outage

UPDATE: Monday, December 27, 2011 – 9:30am

We are aware of the ongoing outage and are actively working to resolve it as soon as possible.

Our hosting company experienced a critical hardware failure and had to replace equipment. This affected several customers, MGO included.

They have replaced the failed equipment/hardware and are now in the process of rebuilding all of the accounts affected.

We are currently anticipating restoration of the website by Wednesday, December 28, 2011.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this process.

Time to buy some VM ware licenses and make sure you don't lose business like this.

Really not sure that website is raking in the cash. The ads might pay for the hosting but that's it. Hell if they had backups they could have just restored the vbulletin database to another server and been back up and running in an hour or two. Had it been a replicated database and not just a SQL dump they wouldn't have lost a post.

Then again it's a 'bubba' gun board so why would they go through the hassle and cost of setting all that shit up? Wouldn't be surprised if everything was lost and never seen again.

I was talking about the host. Not mgo

A web host would use Xen, OpenVZ, and not VMware anyway.

They're hosted out of ACD.net in Lansing so it's not like they have a 'real' host like Rackspace.

I'm suprised they haven't switched hosts by now. 11 days is ridiculous even if the host carried a crappy warranty on their servers, it should have been fixed by now.

the trouble was getting the data back and site back up.

Last week, our hosting service had a catastrophic server failure. All customers on the server, including MGO, were completely down.

They began the process of moving the affected customers to alternate servers. Our site was successfully moved to an alternate server, however, there were database compatibility issues preventing the forum software from functioning. Several efforts were made to convert our forum database and make it compatible with the older server, most failed for various reasons.

As of tonight, we have successfully restored the website and forums on a new server.

Obviously, we are taking steps to assure that we are not left at the mercy of a 3rd party again in the future.

Still, I would have switched hosts and transferred the database. Would have taken less time than 11 days.

between it being the holidays and it being a free messageboard, none of the members cared. plus it sounds like the biggest obstacle was getting the data back in the first place - can't move what you don't have

Sounded to me like the data was tehre, just not cofigured correctly for the new server. You're right thought. I would have just been pissed enough to say "I'm done with this host, I'll find another one who isn't going to cause me this much problem". They better had got 6 months of free hosting out of this.
