Mexican 302 block vs. Late model 302 roller block

THERES no differance there all gunna break around the same power level in my mind no matter wtf you do to it. just build a windsor or buy a afer market block if you think your gunna be in that arena of power or even if you want to grow later on.

spend the money once not twice a good short block should last you 10-15 years with a couple re-rings. My buddies car went 16 years on the same bottom end never re-run and finally spun a bearing last year.

This was a braket car that got raced every weekend at shifted at 7k plus street driven and raced ALOT

If I could afford an aftermarket block i'd already have one. I have access to a few mexican blocks. Thats why I was asking.

I dont think they hold any more, I think it's a myth. They are a tad heavier, but I know of a whole lot of them breaking in half just like the roller blocks.

For a budget I'd say switch over to a 351w. Way stronger and much cheaper than a dart or A4 block.

Agreed on the aftermarket block. I just picked up a mexican, untouched so far. The mains are a bit larger, there is more "beef" to the block. I've heard many who say that they can make super power with them, I've also heard others say they are beefier because they were made from shitty materials.

If I could afford an aftermarket block, I would have one too...I'd also feel like an idiot using a stock T5 with an SVO block too....If I can make what I was making with my stock block, and it stay together for a while, then I'll be happy. I'm not trying to make 900rwhp, just keep what I have together. If you can get one for around $250 or less, go for it, depending on how much machining has already been done to it.

Switching to a windsor could also be a good option, if you don't have any worthy parts on your 302. If I could switch simply by dropping in a 351 I would, but I've got quite a bit invested in intakes and heads, etc than it would be worth to switch over....

I just saw your in Bellevlle, I'm right near there, rather the engine is, if you'd like to see it up close let me know.

I would love to build a good windsor but I do have a little bit invested in my 331. My dad has a few mexican blocks laying around. I figured if I was gonna pull the motor out to have it freshened, I might as well throw everything back into one of those instead. If I decide to go with a windsor, its gonna be a long time before it gets finished because Its gonna be an all forged 408 or bigger. I just don't have the money right now though so I'm gonna keep messing with my lil' 331. How close to the 'Ville are you??

My Dad lives in New Boston, I do all of my work in his shop....
Sounds about right on the 351 build....I thought about it too, but what I've got in heads and intakes, etc for my 302 I'd be stupid to try and switch over....I like the 302, its fine with me, but it'd be nice to have a Dart block or something super beefcake!

I like having a 302 based motor too. But I must say, I would rather have a windsor built the same way as my 331. It would be much faster and the block would be more durable. Some day hopefully i will be able to do that.

I go out to New Boston often. I get race gas from chapps and I go to apple charlie's alot in the fall. My parents live on hannan which is where I keep my car so its not far. Maybe I'll come check your beast out one day. I work afternoons though so it would have to be on the weekend.

Apple Charlie died last week.:(

heads are the same. drill out the holes if they are factory castings.

i still am going to run a 302.....errrrr 306, yea 306

Heads are the same, but the intake goes on the heads, therefore a new intake is a given.

Don't forget about a new distributor.

Oil pan, headers, intake and dizzy is all thats different. You can almost always sell your stuff and buy used stuff for the 351w gig and come out even, no outa pocket exspense. If your a good sales man like a friend of mine you'll come out ahead (i dunno how he does this but always finds a way)

The swap should only take a few hours, a day at most if you work slower..

stock crank decent rod and a of the self pistons + machine work cost me under 2k for the windsor i put together. I assembled it so saved me about 200 bucks... you can sell you stroker prob for close to that.

Hop on racing junk and look for a dart block used. They pop up all the time. Or a world or a A4 etc.

Hey QuickStang.. Does your dad want to sell one of those Mexican blocks?

I have been looking for one.

Thanks
