They can be a bit buggy but work OK overall. The newer megasquirt and preassembled unit are really the way to go unless you know what your doing with soldering and testing electronics.

I have a MS2 running on my 82 Mustang. I'm running a Holley Projection unit on mine so it still looks like it's carbed.
It was a true pain in the ass to get going but now it's running better than it ever has. I didn't have access to a dyno to tune the base maps which I hear makes things a lot easier. I did the old drive around and make changes on the fly which is kind of a pain when your doing it by yourself.
