tricky bastards. For almost a year now the secretary of state will no longer approve or issue title and registration for a UTV to be street legal. So the ones prior are grandfathered in. BUT now the insurance companies are not insuring the UTV;s that are grandfathered in, meaning you cannot renew the plates.

So within a year, there should be no street legal UTV's in Michigan, regardless if you were grandfathered in or not.

So I thought about a way to work around this. Get the UTV titled and registered in another state and then transfer the title to Michigan, seems to be the only idea I can come up with.

This blows as I was looking to buy a street legal RZR and toss a turbo kit on it. Now at least, i don't need to waste my money.

Caveat. you can still drive them up north on the side of the road under 25mph.

It isn't a big deal if you title one in a different state, there isn't one single insurance company that will insure a street legal UTV. At least none the current insurance companies have plans to insure one anytime soon.

SoS knew I had storage insurance on my car when I went to plate it....they know everything now.

Yes, its all linked up now. This is why sometimes you cannot renew by mail or kiosk, it is because they are not showing insurance in their system.

You know Sect of state and most police have access to verify if the insurance is valid on line.

Yes, but i'm not the one doing it so i couldn't care less what kind of problems you encounter if you choose to. I've got friends who have done it with cars for years without issue, good luck!

Fuck em. I just got back from the gas station on my XP RZR. Been driving this bitch in the streets since I bought it new. Knock on wood never had an issue yet.

This is the reason I don't have one in my garage. Heard about it last fall and decided to buy a car instead.

MI is behind the curve with insurance verification compared to other states that I have lived in. Im not sure if I like it better or not. In NC if your insurance lapsed, your registration was immediately revoked until you provided the DMV with up to date insurance.

I had a coworker (in NC) swap insurance carriers and had the coverage removed at XX:XX time/date and a new policy started after that time. It showed as a lapse and he got pulled over, car was impounded and he was fined. It got tossed out when he fought it because he showed proof of the dates of coverage but it was still a mess.

Im also pretty sure that if you fudge some insurance info for the SoS you are going to have a bad day. I think there are signs at each SoS transaction station warning against it.

Is this the reason why I'm having such a hard time getting my insurance company to issue a proof of insurance for my mustang that's been in storage for 7 years?

I've had the same insurance for 7 years, it's been in a car capsule that entire time. When MI registration is due, I get the POI from my insurance company and keep my personalized plate up to date. This year, the insurance company said MI is cracking down and won't allow them to issue a POI with just storage insurance on it. So now I'm stuck giving up my plate or spending lots more on insurance

Whas good insurance these days? Agreed value?
