LS1 Cam Selection

Looking to wake up the '98 SS with a cam. Way too many options and opinions on the LS1 boards.

Stock'ish car, not a daily driver, T56, long tube headers, cold air intake.

What would you choose?
Does a cam in and LS1 need programing?

Send a PM to 99Saleenspeedster at Livernois, they've got a thousand LSx cam swaps for customers and can suggest a good one for you.

Also Sean on our board is a sponsor and has done multiple cam swaps/tunes.

Describe what your ideal camhaft would do.

Strong mid-range gain, lopey/raspy idle, turbo in my future but may not materialize.

Well the idle is a byproduct of cam timing. What may or may not be optimal for your application may or may not produce a raspy snoty sounding idle.

How much do you want to spend on supporting valve trains parts IE springs, pushrods ? Are you oppsed to removing the heads and flycutting for clearance ?

Unsure of budget, depends on the power gains. Rather not pull the heads or clearance pistons at this point. Just something to wake the engine up a little.

What kind of realistic power gains are possible?

I got a used 224/224 112 low lift from Tigger on here, worked out good, could really feel it above 3K.

I was maxxing my injectors, so thats another point, dont go too big or you'll need injectors.

A cam swap is pretty easy on a LSx motor, so I would go cheap! find used parts and make it happen, that how I did my L92 top end.

I would ask your tuner, what do they recommend, bc w/o good tuning it wont really matter

without breaking the bank and just doing springs, pushrods and camshaft headers and exhuast about 50-90hp without making it a bigger honker of a camshaft.Depends on how tolerant you can be of some behaviors. If you want to give me a ring I know of and sell a few grinds that can produce all manner of results.

nah. gonna put some solenoids on top of the valves and ditch the cam

Well that been tried for a long time. The issue is that as the tempature goes up the output of the selenoids falls off dramatically. Sooner or later they will figure out high temp magnets. It is comming thoug. no doubt about it.

Doesnt BMW have a system that doesnt use a cam and just regulates valve lift to negate using a throttle body also?

Sean, What kind of cost am I looking at? I can do the cam install if it saves a few bucks. And I assume I'll need a tune too. Jay

Call me.I am pulling out of town right now. If you can wiati till monday we can go over a few grinds. If your local I might even have a customer you can do a test drive with. He will take you around for a few and show you one of my preffered grinds for a stock motor.

Ok, I'll call Monday. No rush. Jay

Actually Fiat just got it working. MultiAir. The solenoid basically controls an oil orifice that bleeds off oil, the more it holds back, the more lift it gets. It uses Oil as a lifter, genius!
