Lots of planes taking off from Selfridge Air National Guard base the past few nights.

they were bigger planes...probley the a-10 warthogs moved over here from battle creek. The f-16's usually aren't that loud from that far of a distance...unless there doing low flyovers at high speeds. It shook my g/f's house and she lives at 15 and kelly

Did you guys actually see what was going up?

Could be the tranport crews doing tune up runs before heading over to swap replacements in and rotate some guys back.

Rick

they are getting ready for the big send off i believe. My step brother will be going there

HAHA, I love reading this stuff. So many speculations and random hearsay. The F-16's take off at night randomly. They do training all the time. They never have a set schedule obviously for defensive reasons. Plus you can't fly only during the day because you never get extra night flying experience. There's nothing special going on. There are no regulations about flying at night.

And to 1SloDak: F-16's are louder than A-10's.

One of my best friends from work is leaving on the 7th of September for Iraq. He said they told him the initial orders were cut for a year, but it could be 2-2 1/2 before he makes it back here!

:bs: sorry but theres no way the military would pay for someone to be here for 2.5 years, the longest i've heard of anyones tours in iraq being is 15months and that was buy first armored near the begining. although their is a brigade thats had their year orders extended to 15 also, ater the 15month mark soldiers get so many bonus's and pay increases its just not feasable to pay them to stay, its just cheaper to rotate some one else in here.

Well think your wrong. They are tuning up for the send off. If you notice there is a lot of C-130 landing and taking off too.

send off wtf is a send off, the only troop movements in and out of theater are done on chartered commercial aircraft that fly to kuwait, and from kuwait your flown on c130 or c17 to wherever your going.

THose were f16's last night, i'd put money on it.

Nah, there's regulations. They were suspended when we were at war, but technically we've declared an end to that. :hay:

Yea, but who is going to tell them to follow the regulations? If they want to go up they will.

There are no major "send offs" going out of Selfridge. Military gets on a plane at the airport unless you're a part of the aircraft's crew like on a C-130 or KC-135. I am stationed at Selfridge. I know what's going on.

Now there might be a rotation coming up. Some planes might be leaving to take the place of others next year or something but there's nothing going on right now.

Are you in the military? Do you work at Selfridge? C-130's take off all the time. They go away for hours/day(s) and then come back. Some just do touch and go's or they practice drops. C-130's are flying all the time. Nothing major going on.

The Regulation you speak of is called "I fly friendly" and it's the local airfield commander’s discretion when it's applied. (Noise abetment near neighbor hoods)

When I was in the Army I worked in Flight Operations, so I took all the noise complaint calls and knew that regulation inside and out. At the time I was stationed at Ft. Belvoir, VA (10 minutes from the Pentagon) and we had a very nice subdivision get built at the taxi end of our runway. Now anyone who knows airfields knows that the taxi end is where they take all the aircraft for preflight’s and maintence run ups. And a run up is when you run the engine through its operating range while sitting on the ground, Very very very Loud

We'll of course this new subdivision is where the majority of the high ranking Military Brass from the pentagon moved, so nightly it would be General so and so, or commander so and so calling upset that we were so noisy. I wanted to so badly to just say, hey dumbass, you bought a house next to a runway, WTF did you expect to hear, bird singing?

Last time I checked We are @ War people!!! WAR is a 24 hour operation!!!

Technically, we are not. GWB declared an "end to major hostilities" back in May of '03. Currently this is an "occupation" and not a "war"

Again, I say "technically"

Thank you.

Other than during Desert Shield/Storm, Sept 11th, and the more recent Iraq war, I cannot recall a single time that they flew after 10pm. I lived right next to the base for 20+ years.

Agreed. That's the sound of someone about to get their non-American ass kicked.

I was stationed at Selfridge from 00-04 so just because "something" might happend due to 911's annv. is no reason for them to take up in the air. They are most likey doing night qualifications. I would spend many hours out at sea doing Helo op's, the reserve pilots would come to the ship and there soul purpose was to do touch and go's during day time and night time, sometimes well past 11pm, and they need so many certain hours of night landings for certain quals.
Remember Selfirdige is a Joint Task Force base home to alllll the branches of military, all the C-130's could be part of a squadron doing Annual training, taking forces up to Alpena where there is a HUGEEEEE simiulated city where they paint ball at. The last time I was up there we booked it late 02 and I didnt go until late 03, we did security force with FBI and Homeland security guys, fucking blast. The place has a sewer system, buildings, abadoned cars your basic urban war zone. But anyways we took 5 C-130's up there.

Yah I think when I was leaving there they had talked about that and they where handing shit over to the Air Force, but when I left I stayed gone, I enjoy being a civillan much more. If I hate the place im working at I can just quit, but if you have a dick head CO or XO ur stuck until either your term or there term is up! On my ship I went thru 3 Commanding officers, 1st was okay nothing special, 2nd was a bad mother fucker and cool as shit and if I could follow him to every duty station I would have enlisted for another 12 and retired, awesome person to work for. 3rd was such a tool, every day was like "this has gotto be a nightmare, wake up wake up" lool. Anyways some of the guys always ask me if I can get on and get cartons of smokes for them since there cheaper on base lmaooo.
