Looking for a puppy, anyone have any leads?

You know Crazy Al not everyone is a puppy peddler as you call it that breeds, some people actually want to keep quality pups around because buying them from a pet store is not going to do it. I used to breed Rotts and there were no dogs out of a pet store and hardly any from local breeders that had the back ground mine did. So dont always look down on someone who breeds dogs.

I look down on BYB's (back yard breeders) sorry. Just because a dogs is from good lines, does not make THAT dog a good dog to breed. A dog should not be breed unless it is:

*Papered through AKC/UKC or ADBA
*The Sire and Dam BOTH are within breed standards for that breed
*They have both been health certified (hips, elbows, etc)
*They both have sound temperament
*They both are titled (obedience, Schutzhund, agilitly, weight pull, etc.)
*The breeder is breeding to better the breed and not for money
*The breeder limits the number of litters they have and keeps track of their dogs.
*Puppies all have a health guarantee and the breeder will take a dog back under any circumstance

x2 Sounds like they should get their dogs fixed and stop trying to make a buck off of them.

I did all of that and I'm a back yard breeder. One of the studs I used was a national champion. I haven't bred my dogs in 4 years and I can still tell you where all of my puppies are. True enough, there are many bad breeders out there, for sure. But to lump all breeders together is just being prejudice and narrow minded. Like I've already stated twice in this thread, the buyer has to do his DUE DILIGENCE!

I didn't say you were a back yard breeder, did I?

A back yard breeder is someone who does not follow all the stuff I posted. I am not lumping all breeders in one group....just the ones who are not responsible breeders. There are by far more BYB's than good reputable breeders. I agree the buyer has to do due diligence which is why I felt it was important to explain the difference between BYB and reputable breeders in this thread.

Gotchya. I just got the impression that was what you were saying by the way you addressed the other guy that bred rotts. It just seems that people automatically feel that if you don't have a huge kennel and charge $1000 a puppy that you're a BYB. I had that happen to me by a major kennel before, so I guess I'm a bit sensitive about it.

I too hate it when people just breed to just to make money with no reguard for the puppies or the mother. I have a female that is just gorgeous, but she threw terrible puppies. I never breed her again. The other two girls I have, I only bred three times each. In my mind that was enough. Plus for me there my family and I don't want to abuse them. I'd love to breed more. It's very satisfying and therapeutic for me, but 5 dogs is all I can handle. They all live in the house! My kids say that I replaced them with my dogs. That's probably true!

BTW, The last dog I got, whom I wouldn't breed, I got from an animal rescue. He's lab golden retriever mix/mute. He looks like a black golden retriever. Very stunning. Great dog!

Glad we are on the same page now :D

I just wanted to clarify what constitutes a reputable breeder from a backyard breeder. Alot of backyard breeders charge a shit ton of money for their pups too....for "rare" colors and other things that aren't true, but people don't know better!

Rare colors...what a joke! but your right, most people don't know. The one that's killing me right now is the "designer breeds". I'm sure they can be nice little dogs, but people are paying huge money for a mutt! LMFAO!

Pound Dogs can be great have had 3 all fine loving dogs

Now i have a Golden and loving it.

good luck on your search

Hey FBODGRL you should ask before making assumptions that people were back yard breeders. Yes I breed Rotts, mother and father both had Shutzhund titles, father was OFA excellect hips and Elbows, mother OFA excellent on hips did not have elbows done. They were breed because together we believed they would make a better Rott. Which they did. I dont really care about show titles, to me they are a joke, its more of who you know then really the quality of the dog, and yes I screened everyone I sold dogs to, I have refused to sell some people dogs becaise I did not think they had the back ground to handle a big dog like a rott or just from conversation did not feel they were going to a quality home. The funny thing is I went with my now wife 15 year or so ago to a lady to buy a dobe for her brother. This lady was a serious breeder had all the paperwork (Champion this and champion that) and could talk the talk and it turned out to be the worst dog I have ever been around, health issues like crazy. So just because someone breeds in their backyard does not make them bad just like because someone is a so called proffesional breeder does not make them good.

I know, right!! I have thought it was funny since that whole trend started!

Hey cbcchevy.....maybe you should actually read what I WROTE!! I NEVER called you or anyone else in this thread a BYB. I did not ASSUME anyone is. YOU however made that ASSUMTION.....I explained the difference between backyard breeder and reputable breeder :shake:

FYI...a backyard breeder has nothing to do with the person actually "breeding" in their backyard. It is a term used when a breeder is not reputable (ie....doesn't meet the guidelines I posted)

Also...this breeder you are talking about was obviously not a reputable breeder if the dog had health issues. Which is what I wasexplainingin my post! And as patman and I discussed in the posts after that the buyer stillhas to do DUE DILEGENCE because there are alot of people that will throw terms around, talk about "rare" colors, say their dogs arethings they are not, etc.

FBODYGRL, when you copy my post and make a response then its directed at me, if you would have just stated what you said without coping my post into yours it would be different, and yes the breeder of the Dobe was supposedly reputable, listed in all magazine, registered as a breeder with AKC, etc. but most want the dog back, not many people are going to give a dog they have had for 2 years back to get another puppy that may have similiar issues.

WOW....sensitive much? and it is FBODGRL ;)

I copied your post because you said to AL...don't look down on people who breed dogs. I was responding saying I look down on BYB's.....sorry guess I should have quoted you and removed everything, but the last sentence so you wouldn't freak out and hijack Nicks thread :shake:

ONCE AGAIN....I did not call, imply or assume you were a BYB :itsok:

FYI...reputable breeders generally do not advertise in magazines, newspaper, etc. Not that breeders who advertise are bad, but the good breeders don't even need to do that kind of thing.

All I wanted to do was explain the difference between a reputable breeder and a BYB so the OP knew if he decided to go to a breeder for a dog! Do you think maybe when can stop arguing and hijacking his thread!

FBODGRL we could go back and forth about this but since it seems that you are such a EXPERT on this subject and know else is I will let you have.

well if that all falls threw or whatever we have a yellow lab and a black lab that a both young that we were going to breed this summer, if you are interested

We keep Bode ( 7 year old yellow lab) in rawhides, we've never had a chewing problem so to speak.

About any dog will make a good pet as long as you give it some love and attention. It's not a life for a dog to be tied up 24/7 and the only contact it has is when it gets food/water.
