I've decided to see what's available for houses/property in the Troy/Bloomfield Hills area and I'm looking for some input from folks who may be able to point me in the right direction. I'm using these areas as a starting point as I'd like to stay "central" for many reasons, but none are pertinent to this discussion. I'm not opposed to looking a bit further out geographically to the north or west, but for now, I'm trying to stay focused on this area alone. And I'm in no hurry.
Ideally, I'd like to find something (lot size wise) that would allow me to build a secondary building, but I'm not sure if such an animal exists in these two areas (I haven't investigated what the lot coverage restrictions are for both areas yet). If so, I have to believe it would be something that was developed quite some time ago (small, older house on a big lot). Finding an older house that needs some attention isn't an issue as my dad is a residential contractor (out of state, but now retired and offered to come help if I can find a good starting point) and I built houses with him for 10 years.
Bottom line, are there any specific spots within Troy or Bloomfield Hills that might offer me what I'm looking for? I didn't grow up around here, so I don't really know where to start looking or if I'm simply wasting my time. And I'm not at the point where I want to deal with a realtor yet as I'm not sure what kind of $$$ this would command. Speaking of which...I'd be willing to spend somewhere in the upper $300k to low $400k range to start. Not sure what that'll buy me...but perhaps you guys can let me know if this is pipe dream or not.
