Looking for a house in the Troy/Bloomfield Hills area - need input/suggestions

I've decided to see what's available for houses/property in the Troy/Bloomfield Hills area and I'm looking for some input from folks who may be able to point me in the right direction. I'm using these areas as a starting point as I'd like to stay "central" for many reasons, but none are pertinent to this discussion. I'm not opposed to looking a bit further out geographically to the north or west, but for now, I'm trying to stay focused on this area alone. And I'm in no hurry.

Ideally, I'd like to find something (lot size wise) that would allow me to build a secondary building, but I'm not sure if such an animal exists in these two areas (I haven't investigated what the lot coverage restrictions are for both areas yet). If so, I have to believe it would be something that was developed quite some time ago (small, older house on a big lot). Finding an older house that needs some attention isn't an issue as my dad is a residential contractor (out of state, but now retired and offered to come help if I can find a good starting point) and I built houses with him for 10 years.

Bottom line, are there any specific spots within Troy or Bloomfield Hills that might offer me what I'm looking for? I didn't grow up around here, so I don't really know where to start looking or if I'm simply wasting my time. And I'm not at the point where I want to deal with a realtor yet as I'm not sure what kind of $$$ this would command. Speaking of which...I'd be willing to spend somewhere in the upper $300k to low $400k range to start. Not sure what that'll buy me...but perhaps you guys can let me know if this is pipe dream or not.

Any input is appreciated...thanks in advance.

Note: Yes, I know I can find land 40 miles from town and build whatever I want...but as stated earlier, I'm trying to stay central.

The best way to find what you are looking for, it to call a Realtor that will listen to what you want, not tell you what you want. The can actually input a map into your search area and it will only give you the homes listed for sale in that are. I have a agent I send all my clients to that I pre approve, he also helps be buy and sell all my flip homes. Feel free to shoot me an email [email protected]

Thanks, Steve

When you speak of a secondary building on the property what are you referring to? A shed, a ten car garage, a crematorium, what?
Troy is too far east IMO and to find anything with property you're going to either be on the northern end which isn't centrally located or the western end that borders Birmingham (expensive).
Zoning ordinances are usually available online.
Bloomfield Hills, Beverly Hills, Franklin, and Bingham Farms are all nestled nicely together and offer great access to most major local expressways.
Happy hunting.

Actual Bloomfield Hills is very small (5 sq miles) and VERY expensive.
Most people will say they live in Bloomfeild hills, but most live in Bloomfeild Twp.

Bloomfield Hills is a city located in the heart of Metro Detroit's northern suburbs in Oakland County in the US state of Michigan, 20.2 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 3,869. Wikipedia

Area: 5.039 sq miles (13.05 km²)
Population: 3,892 (2011)
