Looking for a Church

Hey everyone! I've been looking for a new church home for awhile, trying to go to a new one every week to see if I can find one that feels right. So far I've found nadda... I was raised at Westminster Presbyterian in Ann Arbor, and for about a yer or so I was driving out to Brighton from Royal Oak to go to 242 Community church (non denominational). I'm looking for a laid back atmosphere, that teaches; not preaches (does that make sense), with good music (Band or Choir, as long as it moves you), and a good community outreach.

Today I ended up at a Tammy Faye Baker style Evangelical church where the minister was speaking in tongues, and everyone around me was muttering stuff. It really creeped me out, I kind of felt like I was in a movie; slightly surreal. Sorry if you're a member of a church like this, not meaning to offend. Just is NOT my style!!

Any one have a really good church around Royal Oak area? Or know the best way for a "beginner in faith" to find their home, other than missing out on quality church time like I have been? Or maybe you know someone I could talk to?

Thanks for your help in advance!

You'd LOVE the church my wife and I go to....would be a hike, but WELL worth it. Here is the website.....

Extremely laid back, awesome band for praise music, all the messages are right out of scripture and put in an amazingly relevant way. The kids ministry is what really started this church to grow so fast....so if you have kids they will LOVE it. A couple weeks ago we hit 260 in the newborn-12 year old age group, and 1100 in the main service (split into three small "experiences"/services). Your children can go to MetroKids while you enjoy the service at the same time. Pastor J (Jeremy) is a very passionate teacher who gives the message every sunday in a way that not only inspires but helps with your everyday life!

If you need/want anymore info PM me or I can respond here.

I hear ya Lucky 7s, I too have been looking for some time now.
The problem I keep finding is if I do find a "laid back atmosphere,
that teaches; not preaches" It tends to be a "seeker
sensitive" church. Meaning they are very weak in
defending the faith - if at all.

There are so many churches now that won't even
proclaim that Jesus Christ is the only way to
salvation. They teach there are other or many ways.
That simply isn't what the Bible teaches.

So remember, when your looking for that new church,
make sure that they are doctrinally sound & correct.

Above all pray & seek guidance from the Lord.

May God bless & guide you on your journey.

I have not attended any masses @ Kensington, but all I hear is raves about it. I think they have several locations, but the one by my home near square lake & john-r. The place is like a movie theater inside....not your conventional church at all. Place packs them in too, wed and sat...several masses each day.
They must be teaching something people want to hear.

I know they broadcast on the local cable channels too.

I don't know of any churches in your area, but check out my brother(s) band. nailpointmusic.com
Btw, it's awesome to see a thread like this on Motown !!!!!

Thanks for the info! Where is the church?

It's downriver....Fort street and Van Horn.....probably a drive for you, but DEFINATELY worth it!

4Gas$.....my church (Metro South Church) isn't too far from you. You should definately check it out! I grew up in church with my dad being a pastor, but as I got older I neede something more different. My dad's church was a bunch of old people, and when all the kids I grew up with scattered I went searching for a new church. Like you, I wanted a place that didn't scorn you, but did preach! I think the teaching, not preaching is taken out of context here, but I do understand what you both mean. You just don't want someone who gets you down and "scares" you into your faith. Pastor J is totally opposite of that.....he weekly reminds you of the gift of Christ and even when things get rough HE will always be there for you. All of the messages hit home and are relevant to this day and age.

I challenge anyone in the downriver area, or anyone who is seeking an uplifting, relevant, family church to check out metro. Link is above, and I believe the address is under contact.

There is always another point of view......if there wasn't a choice of God or no god, then we would be robots. Programmed to do whatever God wants....not everyone will believe. I not only have faith there is a God.....not only have I experienced his love, grace, and provisions for my life....but I've also been convinced that there is a God, and it is the God of Jesus Christ. The complexities of this world are not an "accident"......the complexities of the human spirit and human emotion are not an "accident". They are not an evolution from nothing. Evolution.....or what I call it, adaptation....is real, but that's exactly what it is.....ADAPTATION. Nobody can prove carbon theory.....that's why it's a THEORY! There is plenty of evil in this world that will seem to make sense, but any sensible person who looks at this with an open mind will know there is a God. If you don't......your just running from something you hope is not true.

Heard a lot of good things about this church as well!

Yea. They are opening a Satellite location in Saline which thankfully is about 5 minutes from my house. I currently drive from Ann Arbor to Plymouth to go there and that's about 20 minutes.

maybe you're looking for something like this?

Another good source of info for new and old Christians, or just someone who is skeptical......
Is the book "The Case for Christ".....by Lee Strobel
I'm in the 4th Chapter and it's AWESOME!!!!
It's written by a promonant journalists in Chicago. He grew up an atheist.....but when his wife came to Christ she challenged him to use his journalist skills to seek for logical proof with an unbias, open mind.
So far there has been a ton of reafirming facts that I never knew growing up....and as I said before I grew up with a pastor for a father. It goes deep into all the factual proof for Jesus' life, teachings, and where the current Bible came from. It answers all those catching questions that those who find Faith hard. I'm so excited to keep reading this book and diving more into it! There is also a book he wrote later called "The Case for Faith"....which I ended up buying the book that has both. From the chapter titles, that book seems like it will tackle alot of the deeper issues some people have with their Christian life. The best part is that it's done from a challenging author. He doesn't leave anything to chance, he asks for ALL the explanations.

I attend Woodside Bible church. They have a campus in Troy and a newer one in Royal Oak off of Normandy. Check out www.woodsidebible.org. Pastor Doug is the main pastor and does a great job of teaching the bible and relating it to real life. Very laid back atmosphere and everyone is welcoming. I go to the Troy campus and they have a band and sometimes a choir for all of the music. This was the one church where I remember sitting listening to mass a few summers ago and it actually made sense and was relevant to events in my life. It was kind of cool to have something the preacher said actually apply. I grew up Catholic and remember just going to mass and sitting there. I find myself paying attention and enjoying the sermon now.

Or we have our very own pastor Dan in the club here (dmcghee). His church is harvest bible in canton. www.harvestcanton.org. I have attended a few of his masses and he is a great speaker like Pastor Doug at Woodside. They are actually good friends. They too have a band and a very welcoming atmoshere.

Thank you everyone, for everything. You have NO idea how amazing it is to worry about posting something like this, and have so many of you reaching out the way you have. The info you've given me is awesome, and I'm slowly going through it all! Keep an eye out for my son and I (and maybe my husband too) the following Sundays!! I can't wait to see what you've sent me, through replys and pm's!!

And by the way, I've seen Religulous.... it only reaffirmed my thought that he is one of the whiniest and obnoxious men I've ever seen in public eye. Who is he to challenge Mellinia (sp?) of faith, beit Christian, Bhuddism, Muslim what have you?? Give me a friggin break. I'll be sure to pray for you. And here's something for you to Chew on

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
When they’re starving or freezing or so very poor

No one laughs at God
When the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one’s laughing at God
When it’s gotten real late
And their kid’s not back from the party yet

No one laughs at God
When their airplane start to uncontrollably shake
No one’s laughing at God
When they see the one they love, hand in hand with someone else
And they hope that they’re mistaken

No one laughs at God
When the cops knock on their door
And they say we got some bad news, sir
No one’s laughing at God
When there’s a famine or fire or flood

*Chorus*
But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies say He hates us
And they get so red in the head you think they’re ‘bout to choke
God can be funny,
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious
Ha ha
Ha ha

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
When they’ve lost all they’ve got
And they don’t know what for

No one laughs at God on the day they realize
That the last sight they’ll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes
No one’s laughing at God when they’re saying their goodbyes
But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies say He hates us
And they get so red in the head you think they’re ‘bout to choke
God can be funny,
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way

God can be so hilarious

No one laughing at God in hospital
No one’s laughing at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God when they’re starving or freezing or so very
poor

No one’s laughing at God
We’re all laughing with God

Thanks again everyone!
