Looking at picking up a mercedes s500 coupe out here in arizona. 90k mile car, very clean. Everything works at the moment but wondering if anyone here has every had one or serviced one. Just wondering if they are nightmares to own/work on and should I just walk away.

Dont walk away RUN

I've been with Mercedes for 21 years now.

As a prior Mercedes technician, I'd stay away unless you have one or both of these:

1.) ability to work on your own car
2.) Money for MB parts

Any older Benz (or most German cars) are huge money pits due to the cost of OE/OE spec parts. The cheap repop parts are usually terrible quality and noticably worse performing/have a high failure rate

Never buy a German car out of warranty. If you do, make sure you get a VERY good PPI, to understand what you are getting yourself into.

Also given the choice between a $9,000 Merc that is nice but may need a few things over time, and a $14,000 Merc of the same model that is immaculate and dealer/specialest maintained, ALWAY go for the more expensive one. It will cost you less over the next 12 months. Not that I know from personal experinece.

Thanks for all the input. I could get the car for $3500 and would probably just flip it. It is in very good condition and everything works now, mint interior, very nice black paint! But I guess who knows about working tomorrow and could be a tough sale.
