Escape Vs. Explorer

My wife had a 2008 Mercury Mariner AWD with the V6. First off, the thing couldn't get out of its own way. I believe though that 09+ got like a 40 hp bump and a 6 speed, but all of those will be out the price range you mentioned. Second, ours was a giant POS. Wheel bearings are junk on pretty much all of them from what I've read. I replaced both outer tie rods, both ball joints, wheel bearings, CVJs for torn boots, shocks and struts all before 85,000 miles. I believe the 1st and 2nd gens had the same chassis.

Just goes to show you the variation in manufacturing I guess. I've kind of beat the crap out of my 2008 Escape AWD two tracking and mild off roading and it has been virtually trouble free up to 115K where I'm at now. It has original wheel bearings, ball joints, struts and shocks, CV boots. I replaced one axle shaft cuz the tone ring broke, the front sway bar end links and I also replaced one tie rod end, but for what I've put it through off the pavement I'm impressed. I've known several people with pushing 400K relatively trouble free miles on their first gens.

I had an '02 Explorer and it was a POS. Probably the worst vehicle I have owned in many respects. 2008 Escape Limited 4WD is great, no real issues at 115k miles.

3rd gen vs 2nd gen... No comparison between the two. My Ex has 153k on the original everything and still runs great. All I've done to it has been PM that my buddies parents never took care of. 5.0 and the proven 4r70w, cant go wrong with those two.

Yea, I have been considering a 5.0L explorer. If i kept out of it i could probably manage some decent mileage.

That or swapping the awd system to a true part time 4x4 will help with mileage significantly. Id like to go that route, but my awd system is still working fine so I wont fuck with it.
