long story short

My girl filled out an app for a Grant through EMU and her internship for her masters

The grant was for $10k Cash (stipend) was the terms the contract used

It was to show up as 2 $5k checks

She got the first check, into her EMU account and the EMU immediately pulled $5k away from her in the form of financial aide.

EMU said that the Grant was to be considered Financial assistance.

Some people pulled cash out, and it sent their accounts into the negative, After a few emails she was told that a Mistake has been made and they will get everything fixed.

A few days ago she went to a meeting and they said that it will get paid as a stipend and EMU made a mistake, It is illegal to do what they did.

She got an email today saying that she will not receive the $10k as a payment and will only see the money as financial aide.

Bottom line now she has to do more work, she will not be getting the money, we used some of the money so now she owes EMU, she cannot use any more financial aide because she maximized the yearly amount so she cannot take classes in the summer to get her masters on time.

Everything that has been said we have all the contracts, they used terms like Cash, and Stipend. it affected 9-10 people, 15 people total got the grant, but it didn't negatively effect a few.

It looks like a case where the contract clearly says one thing, they changed their mind and did another. While the entire time the company that runs the grant is saying, dont worry about that, they cant do that, its illegal.

BTW EMU still gets the $1,000,000 in funding for this grant. And instead of paying the $150k out in cash they decided to reimburse Financial aide money.

I really didn't like working at EMU years ago.
Sometimes you just need a good Attorney.

Yes, I dont think this will get resolved without some sort of attorney intervention. Will it pay for itself? Im not really sure. Is it legal for EMU to do what they did? Maybe, schools do shady crap all of the time and you really wouldnt know any better.

Ha I have a friend that wants me to sue EMU for accounting errors on their behalf that they admitted and now won't issue his degree.

I just found out Western Michigan ripped my son off for $400 this sounds like a thing that university's do on a regular basis

I believe all colleges do it, not just the large. They now have online classes, but yet classes still go up in price. Macomb community College claims they have the lowest community college costs, but then charge a registration fee, processing fee, class fee, technology fee, and even more. 2 credit hours at a community college, $300.

Tennessee has just enacted a new state wide program to
pay for the first two years of college for ALL high school
graduates. It doesn’t matter what household income or such.

It can be college or trade school. The kicker is, they did it
without increasing any taxes! One of the reasons we are seriously
considering moving to Tennessee is for the kids college.

The FAFSA will determine the maximum amount of financial aid.

The university can change aid it provides to students itself (self-provisioning financial aid) with regard to changes in need [meaning income change or external impacts on aid]).

The "fine print" probably dictates the rules.

I'm not surprised. I'd just be happy it's a grant and not a loan.
