Kindle Fire Vs. Nook

My daughters birthdays are coming up here really soon and both love to read. I was thinking about getting them both one of these each. I would get the Nook Tablet and not the Color. Seems like you could out grow the Nook Color pretty quickly. I know they can play music, movies and surf. I've been able to found more ingformation on the Nook then the Fire. Does anyone know if the Fire uses Android Market to get App's from? Does the fire have an external micro SD card slot like the Nook? Does anyone have either one of these and can you tell me the pro's con's each.

I haven't played with the Nook. So I can't give my opinion on it.

I do own the Kindle Fire though and I love it for reading. The Amazon Prime account is also useful if you buy on Amazon.com a lot. Free 2 day shipping is pretty epic.

I can't think of any negatives from the Fire. It has everything you really need for an advanced eReader. Perfect size, OS is smooth and I'm a big fan of the Amazon Prime you get when you sign up. I think it's $80 for the year. You easily get your money back from the free 2 day shipping, not to mention the other features you get with it from shows, movies, etc...

As for the microSD card, it doesn't have one, but you don't need one really.

It uses a modified version of the Android Market from Amazon. It has what you need, but don't expect all the apps from your Android phone to be available. It has the major apps, but I'm disappointed it still doesn't have a valid Facebook app or a google chat app.

You can root the device though and install Android 4.0 if you like. Then you get everything you would normally get on your phone and have it on your Fire.

Honestly the best thing to do is go to best buy and look at them both. They will be side by side.

That's what I did, and I went in knowing the pro's and cons of each one so it was going to come down to usability.

I chose the Kindle Fire because it felt better, more snappy, and I liked the interface better.

You can't go wrong with either one, IMO, it just comes down to which one you like more. Go check them out.

Also, you can view comparison videos on youtube. There is a guy "soldierknowsbest" and he did a review of each one side by side.

I bought mine for my girl also for xmas. she loves it as well, uses it everyday still. I'm a laptop kind of person. She uses it to read while she's on the bus heading to work (she lives in NYC).

I am impressed with the battery life of the kindle. It seems to never die. I was visiting her a month ago and I used it here and there everyday for the entire week and never once did we have to plug it in.

The original Nook Color with one of these. It will dual boot, Android runs off the card, unlimited access to the Market. I have had one for about a year and love it and it works flawlessly.

No offense, but spend an extra couple bucks and get an Ipad 3. The new retina display is unbelievable. My wife has not relinquished it since we bought it two weeks ago. LOL..

I have used the ipad and there is nothing special about it. It is way over priced, and in all reality most people are going to download some tit for tat games to play here and there and for quick and easy web browsing. The kindle does it just as well as the ipad at the end of the day. Ipad is a fad for "wow" factor.

Thanks guys! The more and more I read about the Fire, the more I'm liking it. The interface seems to run smoother from everything I've read and heard. I went to Best Buy and the Fire just feels like a better piece of eqiupment. The amazon premier account seems like a really good deal for everything you get.

If the Ipad was only a couple bucks more, then I might consider it. Since I have twins and have to buy 2, it's not worth a grand. Plus one of the problems with the ipad is there is no flash. Say what you want good or bad about flash, but if the web site they visit most right now run flash only and not html5, then its useless. I'm buying these for them to read books and magazines mostly, but I'm also not stupid enough not the realize there going to play games, surf, and download apps.

Just be aware that apps on the Fire are not going to necessarily be free. For instance, the new Angry Birds is free for any Android Tablet or phone except for the Fire. You can side load things, but I don't know if you really want to get into that with your kids devices.

Adobe pulled the plug on mobile Flash and won't be working on it anymore.

Yea. isn't $400 just a couple to you?

LoL, for some I guess.

As far as the flash and HTML5 thing go, it's really not going to be a big deal anytime soon. Hell, Adobe just pushed another update to mobile flash on March 28th. So they're obviously still working on it, but they did say they were going to stop supporting it at some point. Either way, it's not going to change anything any time soon.

Kindle is a good, cheap, Amazon streaming device. But it only has 8GB of memory. Bad thing if you want to watch a bunch of movies on a long trip. Or expect to keep any amount of apps/music/movies/books on it. Amazon's app store only has a fraction of the apps available in the Android Market.

The web browser also isn't very good. It feels choppy and old. And the 'web acceleration' feature that 'uses the cloud' actually slows it down.

The battery only lasts 6 hours which is a little over half the iPad's 10 hours.

The smaller size is a personal choice. Some like 10" tablets some like the smaller 7" models.

I was going to buy one for my girlfriend for xmas since she orders something from Amazon every day it seems like and we have Amazon prime - but we have it built into our TV and she already has a laptop so there wasn't much point.

You can get the iPad 2 for $399 now - and it's only $350 at Microcenter. That's more than $199 but it might be worth it. Plus there's a rumor of a smaller, 7" iPad coming out in the near future. Same as the iPad 2 just smaller screen.

The long trip with no access to wifi, yes, you would only be able to store up to 8GB of music of movies on it. A standard movie download is around 1.5GB. So depending on how long this trip is, you could store up to around 5 movies on the device before pushing it too close to 8GB. So not awful.

Doesn't really mean a whole lot since 99% of what you're watching and listening to is going to be streaming.

Apps and books take up nothing as far as space goes. Music and movies are streaming so they're never stored on the device. So that really isn't an issue.

Amazon's app store only has a fraction of the apps available in the Android Market.

This is very true and annoying. It has your standard apps every one downloads (Angry Bird, Fruit Ninja, Words with Friends, etc...) but for those that enjoy downloading a lot of applications, you'll probably notice some of your apps not available on Amazon's version of Google Play.

The web browser also isn't very good. It feels choppy and old. And the 'web acceleration' feature that 'uses the cloud' actually slows it down.

Going to have to disagree with you as far as choppy and old. It's not comparable to mobile safari on the iPad or any desktop browser, but it's not awful either. I load pages and view them perfectly fine on the Fire.

The battery only lasts 6 hours which is a little over half the iPad's 10 hours.

I would certainly hope so. The iPad is much bigger than the Fire and houses a much bigger battery.

Plus there's a rumor of a smaller, 7" iPad coming out in the near future. Same as the iPad 2 just smaller screen.

I heard this also awhile back. Which is funny since Steve Jobs said 7 inch tablets are dead on arrival. Guess will see what Tim Cook has to say about that.

Exactly. It doesn't compare. Plus 600 pixels stinks for viewing a page, 768 is bad enough. It's like surfing on a phone.

The quote was 'the current crop of 7" tablets is DOA', and he said that almost 3 years ago. Remember how shitty they were back then? People are buying smaller tablets and bigger phones these days so it wouldn't be a surprise if they made a 7" model.

But the rumor that a 'mini iPad' is coming out next month has been around for 3 years.
