John's 1992 Camaro Project

Hello everyone, just joined the site! Heard a few things about it, figured I'm already on mifbody so why not join here.

A few things about me; I'm 17 with a passion for cars. I'm currently a senior and also dual enrolled an MCCC here in Monroe. I actually live near Carleton and travel north and south. I also own a 91' Camaro 3.1l that I will be using as my DD. It was my first car and I was unfortunately involved in an accident in September. Which brings me to my current project; a 1992 Camaro RS.

The day after the accident I called up a couple I met at a show in Flat Rock. They told me they were looking to sell a 2 year project that hasn't been touched in forever. I told them I was interested at the time, but ended up changing my mind shortly after the show. Well after the accident I remembered about the car and gave them a call. The next day me and my dad went out and bought the car for a measly $1650.

Specs:

1992 Camaro 25th Anniversary
305 TBI w/ WC t5
3.08 Open Rear w/ Drums
Flowmaster Muffler
Very LITTLE Options, heck it doesn't even have rear defrost.

I drove the car home, only issues that I saw were no brake lights, and the heater core was leaking. Nothing major, all to be fixed in time. The paint was quite sad, as the clear coat was destroyed on the whole front of the car. Also the hood was quite chipped from rocks. The car has 180k miles and is absolutely rust free. Recently I have started the tear down. First out with the red interior as I will be swapping my pristine grey interior from the 91' over. Also picked up a set of 4th gen cloth seats for $45, couldn't pass that deal up.

At the end of December I found what I was looking for, a 350 TPI! What made this engine even cooler was that it was from a 1991 1LE Camaro. The owner is doing an LS3 swap and no longer needed it. The engine fits my needs perfectly, it also came with the computer. Only thing that was missing was the wiring harness, but I managed to find one from a 92' firebird that had a 305 TPI w/ T5. This harness should be plug and play, I re loomed it completely and also cleaned up all the wires.

As of right now I am starting to pull the tired 305 out. I don't plan for any performance upgrades to the 350 as they are not really in my budget. Being 17 I watch my pennies very carefully. All that should be left for me to buy is a fuel pump, I plan to go with a Walbro 255. I also have a guy from MiFbody who said he would burn a chip for me. Here are some pictures;

Welcome to MM!
I used to be into 3rd gens for a good while. I was on TGO and know these cars inside and out if you happen to need any advice. And just a heads up, that T5 won't last behind the 5.7 very long so you might want to try and save up for a t56 one day ;)
Here's a pic of my 87 iroc that had a few mods and a custom paint job. glfcrse4.jpg

Always loved those cars, still do.

Is that a factory radio delete?

Welcome.

I was wondering that too, gotta be a southern car still has good quarters and the lack of rear defrost

if that is a factory radio delete plate sell it to me I need it for the wifes truck

Not mine, but really good friend of mine. Yea it was at diamonds before we took it on the power tour last year. Hope to have me heap to diamonds in a couple weeks.

Going to respond to all the posts in paragraphs in order so there is no confusion : ) Lots of response, thanks guys!

Bubba, that looks like a sweet iroc! Its getting harder and harder to find any nice thirdgens down here in monroe. All of them look like crap! And I agree with you on the t5, but if I drive the car like a "normal" person I don't think I will run into many problems. A t56 would be great, but it was simply out of the budget.

Rick, its not in fact a factory radio delete. The owner before the guy I bought it from must of had a very nice radio in it. There are the connections for a radio underneath there, also a subwoofer/tweeter output underneath the dash along with a radio signal amplifier. That cover is just some sort of fabric over the radio adapter.

Moneypit, nope its not a factory radio delete. Sorry about that : )

Jdubb, I would have loved to! A budget 5.3 swap would have been nice, but way out of my price range. Keeping things around $1000 is hard. Actually the motor feel into my hands for only $300 so I couldn't pass it up. The TPI system on top sells for more than that.

red347lx, Where are you at? I live on Ready road between Grafton and Telegraph. I never see much around Carleton, only guys and their lifted trucks. I use to go to Airport but I didn't like at all so I transferred to the Monroe County Middle College.

Casper302, looks like a nice car! What does it run? Looks to have a drag setup on it along with the 360 and TH350.

Also here is a picture of my 91', maybe some of you saw me around last summer. I made it to a LOT of shows in the little time I drove the car. Put almost 6k miles on it in just a few months.

Welcome. I too am a TGO member, but I sold my IROC back in 2009, to a guy in Monroe now that I think of it. Good luck with the build. I'll be following it.

Funny to see so many third gen fans here. People used to hate these cars.

Golden, who did you sell your car to? Me and my buddy Brando know pretty much every thirdgen running around monroe.

No idea what it run's probably low 12's on motor and mid 10's on nitrous. It's got the sphon tubular suspension, pan hard and cross member. Has lakewood shocks up front with strange rears, moser axles ect...

Sounds like it is pretty decked out! There is a lot of aftermarket support for these cars now a days.
